Understanding Passover

Overview

This 45-minute session is designed for a CFE Second Level class of 22 pupils (roughly ages 10-12) studying Religious Education in Scotland. The lesson aims to deepen pupils’ understanding of Passover by engaging them in storytelling, hands-on exploration, and reflective discussion. It addresses the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) Experiences & Outcomes related to Religious and Moral Education (RME), particularly:

  • SOC 2-04a: I can compare the key beliefs and features of Christianity and other world religions and consider their place in the local community.
  • RME 2-03a and RME 2-07a: I can discuss how and why people express their beliefs and values, and explain how symbolism helps believers express meaning.
  • RME 2-09a: I understand and explain why people value freedom and remember significant events.

Learning Objectives (Success Criteria)

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Retell the story of Passover in their own words.
  • Explain the symbolic meaning and components of the Seder plate.
  • Express their own opinions about freedom and the importance of remembrance in the context of Passover.

Resources Needed

  • Large visual story cards or digital presentation summarising the Passover story.
  • Replica or actual Seder plate with labelled items (or images if real ones unavailable): lamb shank, bitter herbs, charoset, egg, parsley, salt water.
  • Whiteboard and markers or flipchart paper.
  • Worksheet for reflective activity ("Freedom and Remembrance" prompt).
  • Sticky notes and pens for quick opinion-sharing.
  • Timer or stopwatch.

Lesson Structure

1. Engage and Introduce (5 minutes)

  • Begin with a brief, interactive discussion: Ask pupils what they know about Passover or any festival that celebrates freedom and remembrance.
  • Highlight the purpose of the lesson: understanding Passover’s story, its symbolism, and reflecting on its themes.

2. Storytelling with Role-play (15 minutes)

  • Use visual story cards to narrate the Passover story in 5 parts (e.g., slavery in Egypt, Moses’ role, the plagues, the first Passover meal, the Exodus).
  • Divide pupils into 5 groups of 4-5; assign each group one part of the story to read and then act out in their own words.
  • Each group performs their short dramatization, encouraging them to retell clearly and creatively.
  • Teacher facilitates and models correct retelling language where necessary.

3. Exploring the Seder Plate (10 minutes)

  • Show the Seder plate and explain each of the six items briefly, with visuals or by passing around the items.
  • In pairs, pupils discuss what they think the symbolism of each item means.
  • Share explanations with the class, correcting misconceptions and enriching understanding.
  • After discussion, pupils complete a quick matching activity on a worksheet, linking each item to its symbolic meaning.

4. Reflecting on Freedom and Remembrance (10 minutes)

  • Introduce the concept of freedom and remembrance linked to Passover through a short thought-provoking prompt:
“Why is it important to remember events like Passover? What does freedom mean for you?”
  • Pupils individually write their responses on sticky notes to share anonymously.
  • Collect and read a few out loud, facilitating a whole-class discussion on diverse opinions and thoughts linked to contemporary concepts of freedom.
  • Prompt pupils to think about how these ideas are reflected in their own communities or lives.

5. Plenary and Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Conduct a quick “pass-the-ball” verbal quiz: pupil holding the ball must retell one key element of the Passover story or describe one item on the Seder plate.
  • Wrap up by reviewing the learning objectives, asking pupils to self-assess by showing a thumbs-up/down on how confident they feel about the success criteria.
  • Highlight the cultural and moral significance of Passover beyond the story.

Differentiation and Inclusion

  • Support: Provide sentence starters for retelling the story and writing reflections for pupils needing extra scaffolding.
  • Challenge: Encourage more able learners to make links between Passover and other freedom-related events or religious festivals globally.
  • Include pupils with additional support needs by assigning mixed-ability groups for role-play, ensuring active participation.

Assessment for Learning

  • Observation of group role-plays for accurate story retelling.
  • Worksheet and discussion participation to check understanding of the Seder plate.
  • Reflective sticky notes and class discussion to assess pupils’ ability to form and express opinions on abstract themes.
  • Verbal quiz to reinforce and assess retention.

Curriculum Integration and Values

This lesson supports interdisciplinary skills in literacy (storytelling, discussion), citizenship (understanding freedom and remembrance), and religious literacy aligned to Scottish RME benchmarks. It fosters critical thinking, empathy, and cultural respect.

Teacher’s Reflection

After the lesson, consider:

  • Were pupils able to effectively retell the story?
  • Did the Seder plate activity enhance their symbolic understanding?
  • How well did pupils express opinions on freedom?
  • Which elements of the lesson engaged pupils most, and how might it be adapted for different cohorts?

This approach embraces active learning and multiplies modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) to enhance comprehension and retention, aligned to CFE principles of personalisation, choice, and challenge.
