Curriculum Links

  • PSHE Education Programme of Study (2019): Focus on health and wellbeing, identifying risks, and understanding how to make informed choices.
  • Health Education (2019): Understanding physical health and mental wellbeing as part of developing pupils' understanding of active and healthy lifestyles.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Define what good physical health means.
  2. Identify early signs of physical illness.
  3. Explain how common illnesses can be treated effectively with the right care.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Poster paper and coloured markers
  • Printed handouts on common illnesses (e.g., colds, flu, stomach aches)
  • Fun medical supply kits (band-aids, thermometer props, etc.)
  • Scenario cards for role-play activities

Lesson Flow

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Begin with a quick class discussion asking students what they think good physical health means. Write key responses on the whiteboard.
  • Introduce the three main aspects of good physical health:
    • Nutrition: Eating balanced meals.
    • Exercise: Engaging in physical activity.
    • Rest: Importance of sleep.

Main Activity: Recognising Illness (15 minutes)

  • Group Work (8 minutes): Divide students into groups of four (total 20 groups). Each group receives a printed handout about a common illness (e.g., common cold, flu, etc.).
    • Groups will read and highlight:
      • Early signs of the illness (e.g., cough, fever).
      • Basic treatment options (rest, fluids, over-the-counter medicine).
  • Role Play (7 minutes): Each group will present their illness and perform a mini-sketch illustrating the signs and what someone might do to feel better. They can use props from the medical supply kits for added engagement.

Class Discussion: Treatment & Care (5 minutes)

  • After all groups have presented, facilitate a discussion to review the treatments shared and highlight:
    • When to see a doctor.
    • The importance of proper care and hygiene (e.g., washing hands).
  • Encourage students to share any experiences (if comfortable) about times they or someone they know had to care for an illness.

Reflection & Closing (5 minutes)

  • Ask students to write down:
    1. One thing they learned about good physical health.
    2. One early sign of illness they didn’t know before.
  • Collect responses for a quick formative assessment.
  • Conclude the lesson by reinforcing that good physical health can often prevent illnesses and that knowing how to care for oneself is crucial.

Extension Activities (Optional)

  • Encourage students to create a 'Healthy Habits' poster at home highlighting what they learned, which can be displayed in the classroom.
  • Provide a resource list for parents/guardians on how to manage common illnesses at home.

Assessment

  • Observe group participation during activities and discussions.
  • Review reflection notes to gauge understanding and retention of key concepts.

Adaptations

  • For students with special educational needs, provide simplified handouts or ensure larger groups for support.
  • Consider pairing students with varied abilities to encourage peer support during group work.

By actively engaging students through discussion, hands-on activities, and creative performances, this lesson plan ensures a dynamic learning atmosphere while meeting UK educational standards.
