Lesson Structure (60 minutes)
1. Introduction & Activation (10 mins)
Activity: “Viking Arrival!” Role-Play and Timeline Placement
- The teacher enters dramatically dressed as a Viking or with a Viking helmet, grabs students’ attention.
- Ask: “Who were the Vikings? When did they live?” Collect what pupils already know.
- Reveal large timeline on board. Briefly explain where Vikings fit (c.790–1066AD), placing alongside Romans and Anglo-Saxons.
- Students hold up picture cards showing Viking life aspects. They come up to place them on the timeline or around a simple map of Britain showing Viking raids and settlement areas.
Curriculum Links: Developing chronological awareness, placing events in context.
2. Interactive Activity – “Viking Raiders or Settlers?” (15 mins)
Activity: Viking Scenario Role-Play
- Split class into 6 small groups.
- Give each group a scenario card with roles (e.g., Viking trader, explorer, farmer, warrior).
- Each group discusses their role’s perspective and prepares a short 1-2 minute presentation or ‘Viking diary entry’ explaining their lifestyle, goals, or feelings.
- Encourage using some Viking terms or runes (optional).
- Groups present back to class. Display excitement and ask follow-up questions.
Curriculum Links: Understanding Viking daily life, cultural diversity, and viewpoints.
3. Hands-On Creative Task – “Runes & Viking Messages” (15 mins)
Activity: Write Your Name in Runes
- Introduce students to Viking runes and their significance.
- Provide rune charts and worksheets.
- Pupils write their name or a key Viking word (e.g., “raid,” “shield,” “Longship”) using runes.
- Challenge: decode a simple Viking message written by the teacher.
- Display final productions on classroom wall.
Curriculum Links: Engaging with historical sources and symbols, literacy development in historical context.
4. Scavenger Hunt – “Discover Viking Clues” (15 mins)
Activity: Vikings Around Us
- Hide Viking-related clue cards around the classroom or school hall.
- Each clue reveals facts about Viking life, settlements in Britain, or artefacts.
- Pupils work in pairs or small teams to find as many clues as possible within the time limit.
- Afterward, groups share one interesting fact they discovered.
Curriculum Links: Developing enquiry skills; using sources to find answers.
5. Reflection & Plenary (5 mins)
Activity: Viking ‘Word Storm’
- On sticky notes, students write one new thing they learned or one word that sums up their Viking WOW Day.
- Share and cluster words on a board (e.g., “raiders,” “explorers,” “settlers,” “longships”).
- Teacher summarises key learning points and teases what will be explored next in the topic.
Assessment Opportunities
- Observe group discussion and presentations for understanding of Viking roles and perspectives.
- Review runic writing for engagement with historical symbols.
- Evaluate participation and clues recalled in scavenger hunt.
- Use plenary contributions to assess learning outcomes and misconceptions.
Differentiation
- Scaffolded rune charts with full alphabet versus starter sets for lower ability learners.
- Provide more challenging Viking facts and questions for confident learners during scavenger hunt and presentations.
- Support with vocabulary lists and sentence starters for writing activities.
WOW Factor:
- Authentic role-play, visual timeline, hands-on runes, and active scavenger hunt create a multisensory and kinaesthetic experience.
- Dressing up and “time-travel” immersion excites curiosity and emotional engagement.
- Collaborative learning promotes social skills and confidence.
