Volleyball Foundations
Lesson Overview
Unit: Volleyball Skills Showcase (Lesson 1 of 6)
Year Group: Year 6
Subject: Physical Education
Duration: 60 minutes
Class Size: 6 students
Curriculum Link: Aligned with the National Curriculum for Physical Education Key Stage 2, particularly focusing on:
- Developing competence in a broad range of physical activities
- Engaging in competitive sports and activities
- Understanding key rules of team sports
This lesson will introduce volleyball fundamentals, emphasising basic rules, court dimensions, and objectives. By the end, students will have a foundational knowledge of volleyball and begin developing basic skills such as positioning and controlled passing.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Understand the basic rules of volleyball, including scoring, hitting techniques, and boundaries.
- Identify key positions and explain their roles on the court.
- Demonstrate proper body positioning for passing and movement across the court.
- Engage in a modified volleyball-based activity that applies learned concepts.
Assessment for Learning (AfL) Strategies
- Questioning throughout to check understanding of rules and positions.
- Peer observation tasks during practical drills, ensuring students provide feedback to each other.
- Instant feedback from the teacher during movement and positioning exercises.
Resources & Equipment
- 1 volleyball (softer training volleyball suited for beginners)
- Court markings (chalk/tape if indoors, cones if outdoors)
- Whistle
- Whiteboard & markers (for court diagram)
Lesson Breakdown
1. Warm-Up & Engagement (10 minutes)
Objective: Prepare students physically and introduce the sport in an engaging way.
-
Quick Discussion (3 min):
- Ask: “Have you ever seen or played volleyball before? What do you know about it?”
- Briefly introduce volleyball’s history, mentioning its invention in 1895 and its prominence in the Olympics.
- Link volleyball to physical benefits – coordination, teamwork, and fitness.
-
Dynamic Warm-Up (7 min):
- Volleyball Movements Drill: Mimic key volleyball movements while warming up:
- Side shuffles (for lateral movement in court coverage)
- Jumping & reaching (to simulate blocking or spiking)
- Reaction drills (calling out directions for quick footwork)
2. Introduction to Volleyball Rules & Court (15 minutes)
Objective: Build understanding of the game’s structure through visual and interactive learning.
-
Court Diagram & Positions (7 min)
- Use a whiteboard to sketch the volleyball court, marking:
- Net, serving area, attack line, and boundaries.
- Positions: Front row, back row, server (though full rotation rules will come later in the unit).
- Have students physically walk through the positions on a marked area/court.
-
Basic Rules Demonstration (8 min)
3. Practical Skill Development (20 minutes)
Objective: Teach students how to position themselves properly and make basic passes.
-
Body Positioning & Ready Stance (5 min)
- Demonstrate proper stance (feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, hands ready).
- Students practise moving into ready position when teacher calls "Set!”.
-
Basic Passing Drill – Bump Pass (10 min)
- Explain and demonstrate how to perform a forearm pass (bump pass):
- Hands together, arms straight and locked.
- Use legs to generate power, not just arms.
- Aim to direct the ball to a target's chest height.
- Pair Activity: One student tosses the ball gently, while their partner bumps it back into the air.
- Coaching Points: Reinforce soft touches and using legs for control.
-
Passing Relay (5 min)
- Set up a small relay where students must complete three good passes to a teammate before passing to the next pair.
- Focus: Accuracy, control, and positioning.
4. Mini Activity: Keep the Ball Alive! (10 minutes)
Objective: Apply passing skills in a small, engaging team challenge.
-
Set-Up:
- Divide into two teams of three.
- Teams must keep the ball in play within their area using only bump passes.
- Scoring: A point goes to the opposing team if the ball touches the ground.
-
Teaching Points:
- Communication is key – encourage calling out “Mine!”
- Maintain a low, balanced position for better reaction times.
5. Cool Down & Review (5 minutes)
Objective: Recap learning and bring the heart rate down.
-
Stretching Routine (3 min)
- Focus on arms, legs, and shoulders (important for volleyball movements).
-
Reflection Discussion (2 min)
- Ask:
- “What was the most important thing you learned today?”
- “How can communication help in volleyball?”
- Provide positive reinforcement and highlight key moments.
- Give a sneak peek of the next lesson: Introduction to serving.
Differentiation Strategies
- For students who grasp passing quickly: Challenge them to pass while moving side to side.
- For students who struggle with control: Practise short, close-range passes with extra teacher support.
- For less confident students: Pair them with peers who can give verbal encouragement and positive reinforcement.
Homework / Optional Extension Task
- Watch a short video clip of a volleyball match (without expectation of analysis).
- Challenge: Practise the bump pass at home using a light ball (e.g. balloon) against a wall to improve control.
Final Notes for the Teacher
- Even though the class is small, encourage movement by using the court space effectively.
- Highlight the teamwork aspect – volleyball is about trust and coordination!
- Ensure all students are engaged by rotating partners and asking questions throughout.
This structured, engaging lesson provides a strong foundation in volleyball basics while making the learning process fun and interactive! 🚀
