Agility, Speed, and Coordination

Curriculum Information

Subject: Physical Education (PE)

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Class Size: 20 students
Curriculum Area: National PE Standards (SHAPE America)

  • Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Understand how agility, speed, and coordination impact performance in both sports and traditional games like Patintero.
  2. Apply these movement skills effectively while playing Patintero.
  3. Appreciate the cultural and social significance of traditional Filipino games in promoting physical activity and teamwork.

Equipment and Setup

  • Chalk or cones (to mark the playing area for Patintero)
  • Whistle (for game control)
  • Stopwatch (for agility and speed warm-up drills)

Playing Area:

  • Mark a large rectangle (approximately 10x5 yards) on the floor.
  • Divide it into three or four lanes using chalk or cones.

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up (10 Minutes) – Agility & Speed Drills

Goal: Prepare students physically and mentally for the game.

  • Dynamic Warm-Up (5 minutes)

    • High knees – 30 seconds
    • Butt kicks – 30 seconds
    • Quick side shuffles – 30 seconds
    • Arm and leg stretches
  • Agility & Speed Drills (5 minutes)

    • Zig-Zag Sprint: Students run through a series of cones placed in a zig-zag pattern.
    • Reaction Drill: Teacher randomly calls “Left!” or “Right!” and students must shuffle and react quickly.

2. Introduction to Patintero (5 Minutes) – Explanation & Demonstration

  • Introduce Patintero as a traditional Filipino game.
  • Show a simple demonstration of the game mechanics:
    • Attackers must run past defenders and reach the other side without being tagged.
    • Defenders can only move along designated lines.
  • Highlight how speed, agility, and coordination are crucial for both attackers and defenders.
  • Emphasize the cultural significance—how it encourages teamwork and strategic thinking.

3. Playing Patintero (25 Minutes) – Game Play & Reflection

Step 1: Organizing Teams (5 minutes)

  • Divide students into four teams of five players each.
  • Two teams will play at a time (one as attackers, one as defenders).
  • Winners stay on; other teams switch in.

Step 2: Gameplay Rounds (15 minutes)

  • Each round lasts 3 minutes; attackers try to cross to the other side and back without being tagged.
  • Rotate roles so students experience being both attackers and defenders.
  • Challenge: Increase complexity by requiring attackers to use only one foot for sections or hop instead of running.

Step 3: Strategy & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Ask:
    • What strategies helped you avoid getting tagged?
    • How did agility, speed, and coordination help your performance?
    • How does playing Patintero help with movement skills in other sports?
  • Discuss how traditional games help build social skills and preserve cultural heritage.

Closure & Cool Down (5 Minutes)

  • Cool-Down Routine:

    • Slow jog around the court (1 minute).
    • Deep breathing exercises.
    • Light stretching (arms, legs, back).
  • Final Discussion:

    • Summarize key takeaways: agility, speed, coordination, teamwork, cultural appreciation.
    • Encourage students to teach Patintero to their family or friends.

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment (Formative)

  • Observation: Monitor students’ agility and coordination during drills.
  • Questioning: Ask students to explain how they used speed and coordination effectively in Patintero.
  • Exit Ticket Question: “How can agility, speed, and coordination help in other sports or activities?”

Differentiation

  • For Students Who Struggle with Movement: Reduce the size of the playing field or allow walking instead of running.
  • For Advanced Students: Add challenges, such as time limits for crossing or additional movement restrictions.

Teacher Reflection After Class

  • Did students actively participate and show improvement in agility and coordination?
  • Did they connect the game to broader movement skills and cultural appreciation?
  • Were any students extra engaged or struggling? How can modifications be made for next time?
