Lesson Objectives

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up: Phonics Sound Review (3 min)

• Display a set of vowel teams (ai, oi, ea, ow) on the board.
• Pronounce each vowel combination and have students repeat after you.
• Ask students to think of words that contain each pattern (e.g., rain, boil, seat, cow).

2. Decoding Practice: Blending Words (5 min)

• Use letter tiles or flashcards to build a few words on the board (e.g., paint, spoil, bread, shadow).
• Model how to sound out each word by blending the parts together.
• Have each student take turns pointing to and reading the words aloud.
• Ask them to explain how they knew the correct sounds.

3. Encoding Practice: Spelling CVCe and Vowel Team Words (4 min)

• Dictate words with the same vowel teams (e.g., train, soil, dream, flow).
• Each student writes the word on their individual dry-erase board.
• Check their spelling and provide quick feedback.
• If time permits, challenge them to write a sentence using one of the words.

4. Reading Fluency: Short Passage (5 min)

• Provide each student with a short passage that includes decodable words (e.g., The boat sails in the deep blue sea).
• Read the passage aloud as a model, then have students take turns reading it.
• Guide them to apply decoding strategies when they encounter tricky words.
• Ask a comprehension question: What did the boat do in the story?

5. Wrap-Up and Exit Ticket (3 min)

• Go around and ask each student to share one new word they learned today.
• Give each student a quick challenge: Can you find a word around the room that has a vowel team?
• Praise their efforts and reinforce their progress.

• For Struggling Students: Provide extra visual cues, such as pictures of the words. Use finger-tracing to reinforce blending.
