Lesson Plan

1. Hook (3 minutes) – The Phonics Spy Mission

Introduce the student to today’s lesson with a “Phonics Spy” theme. Say:
"Today, you are on a secret mission! Some words have been jumbled, and we need to crack the code to read them! Are you ready to be a Phonics Spy?"

Show the plush toy or puppet and introduce it as "Agent Sound." Tell the student that Agent Sound will give them special phonics clues to help solve the word mysteries.

2. Introducing Encoding and Decoding (4 minutes)

Write the word "map" on the whiteboard and model decoding by pointing to each letter and saying its sound slowly. Then blend the sounds together: /m/ /ă/ /p/ → ‘map’.

Now, model encoding by erasing the word and asking:
"If I want to spell 'map,' what sounds do I hear?"

Help the student say each sound and place letter tiles in the correct order. Repeat with two more words (e.g., cat, dog).

3. Hands-On Phonics Coding Challenge (5 minutes)

Now it’s the student's turn! Provide a Secret Code Worksheet where certain letters are missing from simple words. Example:

Bonus Challenge: Ask the student to switch letters and create a new word!

Sit with the student and review:

• “What did we do to figure out mystery words today?”
• “What helps you know what sound a letter makes?”

Give them a final Phonics Spy challenge: a scrambled word they must decode before their mission is complete! (Example: TAC → CAT)
