8th Grade
Duration
45 minutes (plus 10-minute warm-up before class)
Class Size
25 students
Standards Alignment
Common Core State Standards for Physical Education
- Standard 8.MSD.1 Passing: Demonstrate and apply basic motor skills and movement patterns with accuracy in modified game settings, focusing on passing techniques.
- National Physical Education Standards (aligned to Common Core outcomes):
- Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
- Standard 4: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate proper passing techniques with accuracy in controlled drills and small-sided games.
- Exhibit spatial awareness and decision-making in a modified game context to improve passing efficiency.
- Collaborate with teammates by executing accurate passes within a game environment.
- Self-assess and peer-assess passing accuracy using a rubric aligned with skill competency.
Materials Needed
- 12 size 5 soccer balls (or equivalent throwing balls suitable for passing)
- Cones to mark drill stations and field boundaries
- Whistles for transitions
- Pinnies or color-coded vests for team identification (5 teams of 5)
- Stopwatch or timer
- Assessment rubrics (printed, one per student for peer and self-assessment)
- Clipboards and pens for teacher observations
Lesson Breakdown
Pre-Class Warm-Up Activity: Dynamic Passing Circle (10 minutes)
Purpose: Increase heart rate and introduce passing in a fun, cooperative manner.
- Students form two large circles inside the gym: one inner circle (12 students) facing outward, one outer circle (13 students) facing inward.
- Balls are distributed evenly. Students pass the ball to the person directly across from them.
- Objective: Maintain continuous passing without dropping the ball.
- After 3 minutes, students shift directions and pass using their non-dominant hand to increase challenge.
- Teacher emphasizes the importance of hand-eye coordination and proper passing stance.
Standards supported: Standard 1 – develop motor skill proficiency in passing.
1. Skill Drills: Precision Passing Stations (15 minutes)
Purpose: Develop passing accuracy and technique in a structured setting.
Setup:
Five stations with 5 students per station. Each station runs for 3 minutes with quick transitions.
-
Station 1: Two-Hand Chest Pass Drill
Partners stand 8-10 feet apart, practice chest passes focusing on step and follow-through.
-
Station 2: Bounce Pass Drill
Partners practice bounce passes aiming to land the ball 2 feet in front of the partner’s feet. Feedback given on force and angle.
-
Station 3: Moving Target Drill
One partner moves side-to-side within a cone-defined box while the other attempts to deliver accurate passes.
-
Station 4: Wall Rebound Passing
Students pass against a wall at varying intensities, focusing on catching rebounds and controlling pass speed.
-
Station 5: Accuracy Challenge
Students pass balls through small hoop targets held or suspended by the teacher or assistants.
Teacher Role: Observe technique, cue biomechanics (stance, step, arm motion), and offer corrective feedback.
2. Modified Game: Team Passing Challenge (17 minutes)
Purpose: Apply passing skills under game-like conditions focusing on accuracy and teamwork.
- Create 5 teams of 5. Use half the gym as the playing field.
- Objective: Teams score points by completing a certain number of consecutive accurate passes (for example, 5 in a row) before attempting to score a goal or complete a final target pass.
- Rules:
- Players can only take 2 steps when passing (encourages quick passes).
- Must focus on accuracy over speed.
- If a pass is incomplete or intercepted, possession changes.
- Teacher acts as referee, tracking each team’s completed passes and encouraging positive communication and teamwork.
- Rotate teams after 8-9 minutes to ensure all participate and maintain engagement.
3. Cool-Down & Reflection (3 minutes)
- Static stretching focusing on arms, shoulders, legs.
- Circle discussion:
- What passing techniques helped you the most today?
- How did working with your teammates affect your passing accuracy?
- What could you improve next time?
4. Assessment Methods
Formative Assessment through observation during drills and games:
- Teacher uses checklist for key passing elements: stance, follow-through, pass placement, and partner readiness.
Self and Peer Assessment:
- Each student completes a short rubric rating their own passing accuracy and effort.
- Peer feedback given to one partner using the rubric.
Rubric Criteria Highlights:
- Accuracy: Pass reaches intended target 80% of the time
- Technique: Correct form displayed (stance, follow-through)
- Decision-making: Pass choice appropriate under game situations
- Communication: Use of verbal/non-verbal cues with teammates
Extensions & Differentiation
- For advanced students: Increase passing distance or introduce weaker hand challenge.
- For students needing extra support: Reduce passing distance or provide one-on-one targeted support during drills.
Reflection for Teacher
- Were the majority of students able to demonstrate improved passing accuracy?
- Did the modified game encourage strategic passing decisions?
- How effectively did peer assessments promote reflection and teamwork?
- What can be adjusted to increase engagement or skill mastery next session?
This lesson combines progressive skill development with real-game application and self-assessment, aligned to Common Core objectives on motor skills and social cooperation in physical activities, tailored for engaging eighth graders.
