💡 Teaching Tips for Supporting Early Readers

Colouring first: Invite children to colour each picture before cutting. This helps them engage with the story events and supports fine motor development. Encourage them to use the story to guide their colour choices (e.g. grey seagulls, brown basket).

Decoding support: Read each picture label aloud with the children before cutting. Point to each word as you read. Encourage children to blend simple CVC words (e.g. his, fix, get).

Sequencing support: Before pasting, ask children to lay all pictures on the desk and talk through the story together. Use the words first, next, then, after that, last as you discuss each picture.

Oral language: Invite children to tell a partner what is happening in each picture using a full sentence, e.g. "The seagulls steal the lunch."

Differentiation: Junior Infants may need adult support with cutting and pasting. Senior Infants can attempt to write a word or sentence under each picture after pasting.
