Materials Required
- Previously painted and textured papers (created in Lesson 2)
- A3-sized white card stock (base for collage)
- Scissors (child-safe)
- Glue sticks
- Black fine liners or thick black markers
- Pencils and erasers
- Example images of Ana Blatman's colourful bird artworks
- A visual display or Smart Board for reference examples
Teacher Preparation Tip: Pre-cut some simple bird body templates for students who may need extra support.
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
-
Connect to Prior Learning:
Recap the primary and secondary colours students learned about. Display a quick colour wheel and have students call out examples.
-
Artist Focus:
Show images of Ana Blatman’s bird collages. Discuss:
- What colours can you see?
- How do the colours make you feel?
- What shapes make up the birds?
-
Learning Intentions:
Let students know:
➔ "Today, you will create your very own colourful bird collage, using the beautiful painted papers you made last week!"
2. Main Activity – Create a Bird Collage (30 minutes)
Breakdown:
Step 1: Bird Planning Sketch (5 minutes)
- Students quickly sketch a simple bird on scrap paper — encourage creative shapes (big tails, long beaks, chubby wings!).
Step 2: Cutting and Composition (15 minutes)
- Students cut out different parts of their bird: body, wings, beak, tail, legs.
- Encourage them to mix papers showing different colours and textures.
- Students place pieces on their A3 paper without gluing yet — arranging them thoughtfully.
Step 3: Building the Collage (10 minutes)
- Students glue down their bird parts, layering pieces if needed.
- Once complete, students use black fine liner or marker to outline and add simple details like feathers, eyes, patterns.
3. Reflection and Sharing (5 minutes)
- Quick "Gallery Walk":
- Place the artworks on tables or desks.
- Students walk around quietly, looking at everyone's birds, noticing use of colour and patterns.
- Reflective Questions:
- What colours did you use? Why?
- How did you decide where to place each piece?
- What do you like most about your bird?
(If time, choose a few students to share aloud.)
Differentiation
- Support: Provide bird part templates for students needing help with drawing shapes.
- Extension: Challenge students to add a detailed background using painted scraps or drawing additional elements.
Assessment
Formative:
- Observe use of primary and secondary colours during collage construction.
- Check for understanding of composition — are students thoughtfully placing their pieces?
- Listen to student reflections for evidence of connection to concepts discussed.
Evidence Collection:
- Photograph completed artworks for assessment records.
- Notes from Reflective Sharing Session.
Key Vocabulary
- Collage
- Composition
- Primary colours
- Secondary colours

Teacher Notes
Classroom Environment Tip:
Play quiet, cheerful instrumental music to set a relaxed, creative tone during art-making time.
Inclusion Tip:
Be mindful of students who may need extra time with fine motor tasks like cutting — pair up thoughtfully or offer supportive scissors.
Connection to Bigger Ideas
Today’s activity doesn’t just build art skills; it encourages:
- Exploration of identity and personal style
- Use of critical thinking for design and composition
- Celebration of creativity by viewing each classmate's unique interpretation
Future Considerations
Consider culminating the unit with a classroom exhibit!
Hang all the colourful bird collages on a bulletin board with the title: "Our Flamboyant Flock!"
Invite another Year level to view and celebrate the students’ creativity, linking back to the Visual Arts curriculum's emphasis on creating and displaying artworks for an audience.
Prepared especially for young Australian artists exploring the vibrant world of colour and collage. 🎨
