Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and retrieval. Open with the hook and recap slides and show a deliberately confusing diagram with labels pointing to the wrong features. Ask, “Could a reader learn from this image? Why or why not?” Students discuss with a partner, recall the purpose of a diagram from the previous lesson, and share one feature of a clear diagram.

  2. 7–17 min · Explicit teaching. Use the diagram features and worked example slides to model four checks: accuracy, position, readable labels and connection to the report. Display a short paragraph about how water moves through a plant beside a simple diagram. Think aloud while matching the words roots, stem, leaves and water to the correct visual features. Students help identify a misplaced label and suggest a clearer caption.

  3. 17–25 min · Guided analysis. Distribute the diagram review worksheet. Students work in pairs to inspect a sample diagram and complete the “Notice, Check, Improve” prompts: What does the image show? Which labels are accurate? Which label or caption needs changing? How does the image connect to the paragraph? Confer with pairs and check that students use evidence from both the image and the text.

  4. 25–43 min · Independent revision. Students use a diagram or image from their own information report and revise it on the worksheet. They check that every important feature is labelled, lines point to the correct place, labels do not overlap, and the caption explains the image. Students may redraw the image, move labels, add arrows or replace unclear words. Circulate and ask, “Which sentence in your report does this image support?” and “What will your reader understand more easily now?” Use the independent revision checklist slide to keep the process visible.

  5. 43–53 min · Peer review. Pair students with a partner who has not seen their report. Each student briefly explains the report topic, then the partner uses the worksheet checklist to give two specific comments: one clear feature and one suggested improvement. Students revise one further element after hearing the feedback. Model respectful language such as, “I can see…”, “I am not sure where…”, and “You could…”.

  6. 53–60 min · Share and exit check. Invite two or three students to display before-and-after examples. Use the sharing and exit-question slides to discuss how placement, labels and captions changed the meaning or clarity. Students complete the final worksheet prompt: “My image supports my report because…” and hand in the revised diagram with the response.
