I want to create a lesson plan for one student who is behind in spelling and reading. So far, they have written and read by memorising words. But it is not good at all. They also need help with pronouncing words. Their spelling is subpar, and they can not even sound out unfamiliar words. They have been relying on digital technology to bypass this. But it makes a lot of other things hard for them to do. I sound put them in the reading level of year 5 and the spelling of year 3. Obviously, they can do work of a university level but the spelling and reading of new words is that of year 5 and 3, without memorising.
Today’s lesson uses explicit, scaffolded decoding and spelling routines to help a Year 12 student read and spell unfamiliar words without memorising whole forms. We will practise sounding out, blending, segmenting, and checking using a simple, repeatable system.
