Caring for Earth Together

Overview

Students investigate how everyday choices about rubbish, water and energy affect Earth’s natural resources. They classify actions as reduce, reuse or recycle, then create a short message for the school community explaining one practical way to care for Earth.

Learning intentions

Students will:

• suggest actions that reduce, reuse or recycle materials
• communicate a scientific idea clearly for a school audience

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–7 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Teacher opens the Earth care introduction slides with a striking image of a clean park beside a littered park and asks, “What might happen if everyone used resources and threw things away without thinking?” Students use think-pair-share to identify differences, feelings and questions.

2. 7–17 min · Teach key ideas. Teacher uses the natural resources and waste slides to explain that natural resources come from Earth and include water, plants, animals, soil, air and minerals; model how a paper lunch bag uses trees, water and energy. Students contribute examples and help build a class chain: resource → product → use → waste.

3. 17–29 min · Sorting investigation. Teacher places students in five groups and displays the sorting activity instructions. Each group receives picture examples on the worksheet, such as turning off a tap, using a lunchbox, repairing a toy, placing paper in a recycling bin and avoiding unnecessary packaging. Students discuss and record whether each action mainly reduces, reuses or recycles, then justify one decision using “This helps because…”.

4. 29–40 min · Compare and explain. Teacher leads a class check of the worksheet responses, accepting that some actions may fit more than one category. Ask: “Which action prevents waste before it starts?” and “Why is reducing often better than recycling?” Students explain their reasoning and use terms including natural resource, waste, reduce, reuse, recycle, conserve and pollution.

5. 40–53 min · Create a conservation message. Teacher models a short poster or digital slide: “Save water: turn the tap off while brushing your teeth. Water is a natural resource.” Teacher provides the success checklist on the conservation message instructions. Students independently create a message on the Earth care investigation and message sheet, including a heading, one action, the resource it protects and a scientific reason. Students may draw, write, or record their message digitally.

6. 53–60 min · Share and assess. Teacher invites several students to share their messages and uses the traffic-light check-in cards for a final self-assessment. Students display green, amber or red to show how confidently they can explain one way to conserve a resource, then complete the worksheet exit sentence: “One action I will take is… because…”.

Assessment

• Listen during the hook and group sorting for accurate understanding of natural resources, waste and conservation.
• Check worksheet classifications and explanations, noting whether students can connect an action with the resource it protects.
• Assess the final message for a clear conservation action, an identified resource and a scientifically sensible reason. Use the exit sentence and traffic-light response to identify students needing further support.

Differentiation

• Support students with picture vocabulary, oral rehearsal, a word bank and sentence starters: “This uses…”, “We can…”, and “This protects…”. Allow drawing, dictation or speech-to-text instead of extended writing.
• Pair students strategically and provide a reduced choice of three actions for students who need less cognitive load. Revisit the meanings of reduce, reuse and recycle with gestures and examples.
• For EAL/D learners, explicitly model pronunciation and meaning of key terms, use visuals and invite students to discuss ideas with a familiar partner before sharing in English.
• Extend confident students by asking them to compare two actions, explain which has the greater effect and design a message aimed at a specific audience, such as younger students or families.
