Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 1 of 6 in the unit "Community Fitness Fun". Lesson Title: Circuit Training: Building Strength and Endurance Lesson Description: Learning Intention: Perform a variety of exercises to enhance strength and endurance through circuit training. Success Criteria: I can demonstrate proper form in each exercise, I can complete the circuit with minimal rest, and I can identify the benefits of circuit training for overall fitness.

Connection Warm Up Activity: RAMP protocol focusing on dynamic stretches and mobility exercises.

Body of Lesson: Students will participate in a circuit training session that includes stations for strength and endurance exercises. Each station will focus on different muscle groups and cardiovascular fitness.

Fun Finisher Challenge Activities: Create a mini-circuit of their own to share with a partner.

End of Lesson Reflective Activity: Exit ticket where students list one strength and one area for improvement in their circuit performance.

Circuit Training Power

Lesson Overview

  • Year Level: Year 12
  • Subject: Physical Education (PE)
  • Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
  • Class Size: 24 students
  • Unit: Community Fitness Fun (Lesson 1 of 6)
  • Curriculum Connection: Aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education (HPE) – Year 12, focusing on Movement and Physical Activity. This lesson develops competency in movement skills, fitness program design, and understanding of fitness principles.

Learning Intention

Students will perform a variety of exercises to enhance strength and endurance through circuit training.

Success Criteria

  • I can demonstrate proper form in each exercise.
  • I can complete the circuit with minimal rest.
  • I can identify the benefits of circuit training for overall fitness.

Lesson Structure

1. Connection Warm-up (10 mins) – RAMP Protocol

The RAMP protocol (Raise, Activate, Mobilise, Potentiate) will prepare students for circuit training by progressively increasing heart rate, activating key muscle groups, and enhancing mobility.

Warm-up Routine:

  1. Raise – 2 minutes of light jogging with high knees and butt kicks.
  2. Activate – Bodyweight squats (10 reps), shoulder taps (10 reps), and lunges (10 reps each leg).
  3. Mobilise – Leg swings (side-to-side and front-to-back, 10 reps each), arm circles, and thoracic rotations.
  4. Potentiate – 3 rounds of 20-second sprint efforts followed by 40 seconds of slow jog.

2. Body of Lesson (40 mins) – Circuit Training Session

Students will complete 8 exercise stations, working at each station for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds rest before transitioning. Each station targets a specific muscle group or fitness component.

  • Total Circuit Duration: ~24 minutes (3 rounds of 8 stations with short rests)
  • Equipment: Dumbbells, resistance bands, skipping ropes, plyometric boxes, yoga mats

Circuit Exercises and Focus Areas:

  1. Push-ups (Strength – Upper Body)
    • Challenge: Clap push-ups for advanced students
  2. Squat Jumps (Power & Lower Body Strength)
    • Variation: Bodyweight squats for those modifying impact
  3. Skipping (Cardiovascular Endurance)
    • Challenge: Double-unders for advanced students
  4. Plank Hold (Core Stability)
    • Variation: Side plank for extra oblique activation
  5. Dumbbell Rows (Back Strength & Posture Improvement)
    • Lighter weights or incline rows for modifications
  6. Lunges (Leg Endurance & Balance)
    • Challenge: Add a jump between lunges
  7. Mountain Climbers (Full-body Endurance & Speed)
    • Alternative: Slower tempo for those needing modifications
  8. Medicine Ball Slams (Explosive Power & Core Strength)
    • Modify with overhead presses for those with joint concerns

Coach’s Instructions:

  • Emphasise correct technique to prevent injury.
  • Allow students to choose an intensity level that suits them.
  • Provide verbal encouragement and monitor progress closely.

3. Fun Finisher Challenge (5 mins) – Create & Share a Mini-Circuit

Students will pair up and design a 3-exercise mini-circuit focusing on either strength, endurance, or power. They will then challenge another pair to complete it.

  • Encourages creativity, collaboration, and leadership.
  • Focus on balance between exertion and recovery.

4. End of Lesson Reflection (5 mins) – Exit Ticket

Each student will answer:

  1. One strength they demonstrated in today’s circuit.
  2. One area for improvement to work on next time.

This will be submitted before leaving the PE space to inform future lessons.

Teaching Strategies

  • Differentiation:
    • Modify intensity and complexity of exercises to cater to varied fitness levels.
    • Provide visual demonstrations for technique reinforcement.
  • Engagement Techniques:
    • Use a countdown timer with motivating music to maintain energy.
    • Offer real-world connections (e.g., "Circuit training is a staple for elite athletes and military fitness programs").

Assessment Opportunities

  • Formative Assessment: Observation of technique and effort during circuits.
  • Self-Assessment: Reflection exit ticket on strengths and improvements.

Conclusion

This lesson introduces circuit training in an engaging and structured way while emphasising proper form, fitness benefits, and peer collaboration. Through participation, students develop strength, endurance, and confidence—all key skills for long-term health and well-being.

Teacher Reflection for Next Lesson Planning:

  • Which exercises engaged students the most?
  • Were form corrections needed frequently?
  • Did students maintain endurance throughout all rounds?

This feedback will guide Lesson 2: Exploring Functional Fitness in the Community.
