Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

• Identify and apply primary and secondary colours in their artworks.
• Use collage techniques (cutting, assembling, layering) to create a bird artwork.
• Demonstrate understanding of simple composition (arrangement of shapes, colours, and space).
• Create an individual, expressive piece inspired by artist Ana Blatman.

Materials Required

• Previously painted and textured papers (created in Lesson 2)
• A3-sized white card stock (base for collage)
• Scissors (child-safe)
• Glue sticks
• Black fine liners or thick black markers
• Pencils and erasers
• Example images of Ana Blatman's colourful bird artworks
• A visual display or Smart Board for reference examples

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

• Connect to Prior Learning:
  Recap the primary and secondary colours students learned about. Display a quick colour wheel and have students call out examples.

• Artist Focus:
  Show images of Ana Blatman’s bird collages. Discuss:

  • What colours can you see?
  • How do the colours make you feel?
  • What shapes make up the birds?

• Learning Intentions:

2. Main Activity – Create a Bird Collage (30 minutes)

Breakdown:

Step 1: Bird Planning Sketch (5 minutes)

• Students quickly sketch a simple bird on scrap paper — encourage creative shapes (big tails, long beaks, chubby wings!).

Step 2: Cutting and Composition (15 minutes)

• Students cut out different parts of their bird: body, wings, beak, tail, legs.
• Encourage them to mix papers showing different colours and textures.
• Students place pieces on their A3 paper without gluing yet — arranging them thoughtfully.

Step 3: Building the Collage (10 minutes)

• Students glue down their bird parts, layering pieces if needed.
• Once complete, students use black fine liner or marker to outline and add simple details like feathers, eyes, patterns.

3. Reflection and Sharing (5 minutes)

• Quick "Gallery Walk":
  • Place the artworks on tables or desks.
  • Students walk around quietly, looking at everyone's birds, noticing use of colour and patterns.
• Reflective Questions:
  • What colours did you use? Why?
  • How did you decide where to place each piece?
  • What do you like most about your bird?
