Overview

In this theory lesson, students prepare to communicate their completed design solution clearly and professionally. Building on their design development, modelling and making work from earlier lessons, they analyse examples of effective communication and plan a concise presentation using annotated drawings, rendered views, dimensions, process-journal evidence and an oral explanation.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and learning intention. Open with the opening comparison and learning intention showing a poorly communicated design beside a clear professional design page. Ask: “Which design could you confidently make or evaluate, and why?” Students complete a quick think-pair-share and identify one feature that improves understanding.

  2. 5–15 min · Explicit teaching: communicating design information. Use the communication features slides to model the different purposes of an annotated drawing, rendered view, dimensions, process-journal entry and oral explanation. Students record brief notes on the design communication analysis and presentation planner and match each communication method to the question it answers: what it looks like, how it is made, how large it is, why decisions changed, or how it meets a need.

  3. 15–25 min · Analyse an example. Display the worked example in the annotated design example and model a “claim, evidence, explanation” response. Students independently identify two strengths and one missing piece of communication in the example, then compare responses with a partner. Invite several students to justify their judgements using technical vocabulary such as function, user, material properties, sustainability, accuracy and iteration.

  4. 25–40 min · Individual presentation planning. Explain the presentation brief and success criteria using the presentation structure and checklist. Students use their own design, drawings, photographs and process journal to complete the design communication analysis and presentation planner. They plan a three- to four-minute presentation containing: the design need and brief; the final design with labelled views and dimensions; key materials, tools and processes; two significant design decisions or changes; evaluation against criteria; and one possible improvement.

  5. 40–52 min · Peer rehearsal and feedback. Model respectful feedback linked to the school values of Respect, Integrity and Excellence. In pairs, students give a one-minute explanation of their design using their plan, while the listener records one clear strength and one precise improvement suggestion on the worksheet. Students swap roles, then revise one section of their presentation plan in response to feedback.

  6. 52–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the final reflection and presentation checklist. Students complete the exit questions on the design communication analysis and presentation planner: “Which design decision needs the strongest justification?” and “What evidence will prove that my solution meets a design criterion?” Ask two or three students to share effective evidence choices, then collect worksheets to inform the final presentation lesson.
