In this fourth lesson of Beads: Design, Culture, Craft, students turn their approved bead designs into a functional jewellery item. They apply material knowledge, accurate making techniques and safe workshop practices while managing resources responsibly. The lesson builds on previous investigation, design briefing and prototyping, preparing students for final evaluation in Lesson 5.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Reconnect and purpose. Teacher displays the learning intention and success criteria in the introduction and learning goals slides, revisits students’ design briefs, and asks: “What will make your jewellery both functional and recognisably your design?” Students inspect their design, identify today’s required outcome and collect their labelled project materials.

  2. 5–15 min · Demonstration and safety briefing. Teacher uses the technique and safety slides to demonstrate checking bead holes, measuring thread or wire, opening and closing a jump ring correctly, attaching a clasp or fastening, and safely using pliers, cutters and other workshop equipment. Emphasise eye protection where required, cutting away from the body, careful handling of sharp wire, tidy workspaces and responsible use of shared resources. Students watch, identify one likely construction risk and complete the relevant section of the jewellery construction and quality checklist.

  3. 15–40 min · Construct the jewellery piece. Teacher releases students to work, circulates with the design briefs and checklist, and conferences briefly with students who need a technique decision or safety reminder. Students produce any final beads, check dimensions and surface quality, then assemble their jewellery item using an appropriate threading, wirework, fastening or joining method. They work accurately, minimise waste, return shared tools and record any changes from the original design.

  4. 40–50 min · Functional and peer testing. Teacher directs students to test the item against their design criteria, including strength, comfort, secure fastening, appearance and intended use. Students exchange work with a partner and use the Prototype Testing Feedback Template to record evidence-based feedback, including a criterion-based judgement and one suggested action. Students handle one another’s work respectfully and do not pull or stress delicate pieces unnecessarily.

  5. 50–57 min · Refine and document. Teacher prompts students to prioritise one improvement that can be completed safely within the time available. Students act on feedback, such as securing a fastening, adjusting spacing, trimming excess material, improving symmetry or strengthening a connection, then complete the reflection and quality-check sections of the jewellery construction and quality checklist.

  6. 57–60 min · Pack-up and exit reflection. Teacher returns to the reflection and pack-up slides, checks that tools and materials are accounted for, and asks students to share one successful technique and one next step for Lesson 5. Students clean their workstation, store the jewellery piece safely, submit the checklist and verbally state whether their product is ready for final evaluation.
