Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 8 of 8 in the unit "Dance Explorations: Creating, Performing and Responding". Lesson Title: Dance Gallery: Respond, Reflect and Redesign Lesson Description: Students revisit the unit through a calm dance gallery, performing short phrases, observing peers and responding with drawings, words, audio, gesture or conferencing. They identify how beat, pulse, tempo, dynamics, repetition, patterns and spatial choices communicated an idea, then suggest and trial one small refinement. Year 1 students name one effective dance choice and a next step; Year 2 students use observable evidence to evaluate creating, presenting, collaboration and safe dance practices.

Overview

In this final lesson, students revisit their learning from the eight-lesson dance unit by performing short phrases, observing classmates and responding in different ways. They identify how dance choices communicated an idea, then make and trial one small refinement to their own work.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • perform a short dance phrase safely and confidently
  • observe and describe how dance elements communicate an idea
  • give kind, specific feedback using evidence from the performance
  • make and trial one small improvement to a dance phrase
  • reflect on creating, performing, working together and safe dance practices

Success criteria

  • I can name a dance choice that helped communicate an idea.
  • I can show or explain evidence from a performance.
  • I can give respectful feedback to a partner or group.
  • I can make and try one useful change to my dance.

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and gallery expectations. Teacher opens the hook and learning intention slides, revisits the idea that dance can communicate thoughts, feelings and stories, and models watching respectfully. Students show with their bodies what “ready to watch” looks like: still body, quiet voice, eyes on the performers and safe personal space.

  2. 5–10 min · Reconnect with dance choices. Teacher uses the dance elements reminder slides to briefly revisit beat, pulse, tempo, dynamics, repetition, patterns, body, space and relationships; demonstrate two contrasting versions of one movement. Students identify what changed and suggest what idea or feeling each version might communicate.

  3. 10–22 min · Dance gallery performances. Teacher arranges five groups of five and gives each group a performance space; groups perform their previously created short phrase while the audience watches from seated or standing spots. Students perform once, then repeat if needed, using safe movement, clear shapes, controlled travelling and agreed start and finish positions.

  4. 22–32 min · Respond to what we saw. Teacher distributes the dance gallery response sheet and pauses between performances to offer response options: drawing a moment, writing or completing a sentence, recording an oral response, showing a gesture, or conferencing with the teacher. Students respond to at least two groups, identifying one observable dance choice and the idea, feeling or effect it communicated.

  5. 32–40 min · Feedback conference. Teacher displays the feedback and evidence prompts and models the language, “I noticed… This helped show… You could try…”. Students meet with their group, share one strength and choose one small refinement, such as changing the tempo, adding a repeated shape, making a pathway clearer, contrasting strong and gentle movements, or improving spacing.

  6. 40–47 min · Redesign and re-perform. Teacher gives groups time to trial their chosen refinement, checks that changes are safe and achievable, then invites each group to perform the revised phrase. Students make the change, perform again and briefly compare the first and second versions, explaining whether the refinement made the idea clearer.

  7. 47–50 min · Reflect and close. Teacher returns to the reflection and exit prompt slide and conducts a quick class share. Students complete or communicate one response: “One effective dance choice was…”, “It showed… because…”, and “Next time I will…”. Year 1 students name one effective choice and one next step; Year 2 students include observable evidence about creating, presenting, collaboration and safe dance practices.

Resources

  • the complete dance gallery slide deck
  • the dance gallery response sheet
  • Open floor or hall space
  • Music player and one instrumental track
  • Five clearly marked performance areas
  • Pencils, crayons and clipboards
  • Optional tablet or audio recorder for oral responses
  • Cones or floor markers
  • Water and safe footwear

Assessment

  • Observe whether students use beat, pulse, tempo, dynamics, repetition, patterns and spatial choices intentionally during performance. Note students who need prompting to control movement, maintain space or sustain a phrase.
  • During responses, check whether students identify an observable choice rather than giving a general opinion. Accept drawing, words, audio, gesture or conferencing as valid evidence of understanding.
  • Use the final reflection to assess whether students can identify an effective choice and a realistic next step. For Year 2, listen for evidence about the process of creating, presenting, collaborating and dancing safely.

Differentiation

  • Provide picture prompts and sentence starters: “I noticed…”, “It showed…”, “I liked when…”, and “Next time…”. Scribe, record or conference with students who cannot yet express their response in writing.
  • Allow students to respond through drawing, movement, pointing, oral explanation or partner dictation. Offer a quiet observation position for students who find the performance environment overwhelming.
  • Rehearse the audience routine and use floor markers to support students who need clear spatial boundaries, predictable transitions or reduced movement choices.
  • Extend Year 2 students by asking them to compare both performances and justify whether the refinement improved communication, using two pieces of evidence. Invite confident performers to explain how their group made decisions together.
