Days and Dates

Overview

This is lesson 9 of 20 in Filipino Language Foundations. Students learn and use Filipino days of the week, months and date conventions, then apply them to birthdays and simple calendar information through supported speaking, writing and reading tasks.

Learning intentions

Students will:

• recognise and say the days of the week and months in Filipino
• use Filipino date conventions to state a birthday or calendar date
• ask and answer simple questions about birthdays and dates
• record familiar calendar information in a short written text

Success criteria

• I can say and write the days of the week and months in Filipino.
• I can state my birthday using a Filipino date pattern.
• I can ask and answer “When is your birthday?” in Filipino.
• I can understand and record at least three simple calendar dates.

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

1. 0–4 min · Calendar hook. Teacher opens the hook and calendar image and displays a birthday calendar with three dates, asking, “What information can we find on a calendar?” Students identify familiar features such as numbers, months and birthdays, responding in English or Filipino as appropriate.

2. 4–11 min · Teach days and months. Teacher uses the days and months vocabulary slides to model the Filipino vocabulary, with clear pronunciation and repetition: Lunes, Martes, Miyerkules, Huwebes, Biyernes, Sabado, Linggo and Enero, Pebrero, Marso, Abril, Mayo, Hunyo, Hulyo, Agosto, Setyembre, Oktubre, Nobyembre, Disyembre. Students repeat, read aloud and identify the requested day or month when shown on screen. Teacher briefly highlights that Filipino commonly uses Spanish-derived month names and that dates are often expressed day–month–year.

3. 11–16 min · Build date sentences. Teacher models the sentence frames on the date sentence-pattern slides: Kaarawan ko ay ika-___ ng ___ (“My birthday is on the ___ of ___”) and Kailan ang kaarawan mo? (“When is your birthday?”). Teacher also models Ngayon ay ___, ___ (“Today is ___, ___”) using the current day and date. Students complete the frames orally with a real or invented birthday, then write two model sentences on the dates and birthdays practice sheet.

4. 16–23 min · Guided calendar practice. Teacher displays the guided calendar activity and gives the student six dates to interpret, including a birthday, a school event and a weekend date. The teacher asks questions such as Anong araw? (“What day?”), Anong buwan? (“What month?”) and Kailan? (“When?”). Student reads each date, identifies the month and day, and records answers on the worksheet. Teacher provides immediate feedback on vocabulary, word order and spelling.

5. 23–27 min · One-to-one information exchange. Teacher and student conduct a short role-play using the conversation prompt. Teacher asks Kailan ang kaarawan mo? Student answers using the modelled sentence, then asks the teacher the same question. Repeat with two additional calendar prompts, such as a favourite month and an upcoming event. Student may use the worksheet as a support, then attempts one exchange without looking.

6. 27–30 min · Review and exit check. Teacher returns to the review and exit-question slide and asks the student to say one day, one month and one complete date. Student completes the final three-item exit task on the worksheet: write a month, write a day and write a sentence stating an invented birthday. Teacher collects the worksheet and records whether the student can recognise, pronounce and use the date pattern independently.

Assessment

• During vocabulary teaching, check whether the student can identify and pronounce at least five days or months when prompted.
• During guided practice, assess accurate reading, spelling and sequencing of dates, noting whether the student needs the sentence frame.
• Use the worksheet exit task and final oral response to determine whether the student can state a birthday and answer a simple date question.

Differentiation

• Support with a visible word bank, colour-coding for day/month/year, repeated teacher modelling and the sentence frames Kailan ang…? and … ay ika-___ ng ___.
• For pronunciation or literacy difficulties, allow the student to point, trace, rehearse privately and use a reduced selection of days and months before returning to the full set.
• Provide an English gloss beside new Filipino vocabulary only when needed; prioritise visual calendar cues and oral rehearsal for EAL/D learners.
• Extend the task by asking the student to give two dates, compare a weekday and weekend date, or create a three-sentence mini calendar announcement using Ngayon, bukas and sa susunod na linggo.
