Teaching Instructions

Students are going to learn to use Canva which is new to the teachers and the students. Students have a good understanding of basic functions of a laptop, such as how to use the keyboard and mouse. I have a good understanding of how to use Canva at a basic level. This class has used other online platforms but has never heard of Canva. This will be one lesson with a duration of 50 minutes. This is a Year 4 class, exploring the outcome 'ST2-DDT-02' in the NSW Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus.

Overview

Students are introduced to Canva as a digital tool for creating and communicating content. They follow a teacher demonstration to design a simple “My Digital System” information card, selecting suitable text, images and layout features while applying agreed conventions for safe, respectful and organised digital work.

Learning intentions

Students will:

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and purpose. Open with the opening question and learning intention slides and display two contrasting digital information cards: one clear and one cluttered. Students discuss which card would help a new student learn about a digital system and explain why.

  2. 5–12 min · What is Canva? Use the Canva introduction and digital systems slides to explain that Canva is a digital design tool used to create and communicate content. Model the idea that a laptop, tablet or phone is a digital system and that peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse, camera, microphone, screen, printer and speakers extend what the system can do. Students turn and talk about which system and peripherals they use for different tasks, such as recording sound, finding information or presenting ideas.

  3. 12–20 min · Teacher demonstration. Project Canva and follow the step-by-step demonstration slides. Model opening the class template, choosing a suitable layout, adding a heading, typing short factual information, inserting an appropriate image or icon, changing text size and colour, and checking alignment. Explicitly model the class conventions: use school-approved accounts, do not include surnames or personal contact details, choose respectful images, save with a logical file name, and ask before sharing. Students watch, identify the tool used at each stage and ask clarifying questions.

  4. 20–37 min · Guided design task. Distribute the Canva design planner. Students work individually at laptops to create a one-page card titled “A Digital System I Use”. They include the system’s name, its purpose, at least two peripherals and what each peripheral helps the user do. They add one suitable image or icon and use a readable layout. Students first complete the planner, then create their card in Canva. The teacher circulates, checking account access, supporting tool selection and asking: “Who is your audience?”, “What does this peripheral allow the system to do?” and “How will your reader know what is most important?”

  5. 37–45 min · Test, peer feedback and revise. Use the checklist and peer-feedback slides to lead a quiet gallery review on screens, or pair students with a nearby classmate. Each reviewer gives one specific positive comment and one suggestion using: “I can clearly see…”, “I learnt…”, and “You could improve…”. Students check that text is readable, information is accurate, the image is relevant and no private information is included, then make one improvement. Where appropriate, briefly explain that their card is data that can be transmitted between systems when it is saved, displayed or shared.

  6. 45–50 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the reflection and exit-question slides. Invite two or three students to explain a design choice and name a peripheral featured in their card. Students complete a quick verbal or written exit response: “One Canva feature I used was…”, “One peripheral and its purpose is…”, and “One safe or respectful convention I followed was…”. Students save their work using the agreed file name and close Canva.

  • Provide step cards or pause the demonstration after each Canva feature. Offer enlarged text, screen magnification, headphones for spoken instructions and additional time for students with fine-motor, processing or attention needs.
  • EAL/D learners may plan ideas orally, use labelled picture choices and work with a supportive partner before entering short sentences. Explicitly teach “digital system”, “peripheral”, “input”, “output” and “storage” as needed.
  • Extend confident students by asking them to compare two systems used for the same task, explain how a peripheral changes functionality, or design for a specific audience such as a younger class.
