In this second lesson of Beads: Design, Culture, Craft, students move from investigating jewellery ideas to practical experimentation. They investigate bead-making techniques, safely use tools and materials, and produce a range of prototypes to inform their developing jewellery concept.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Reconnect and hook. Teacher opens with the hook and lesson overview slides, revisits the previous lesson’s jewellery concepts and asks, “How can one small bead change the function, identity or sustainability of a piece of jewellery?” Students sketch or describe one bead that would suit their existing concept, then share one material they might test.

  2. 5–15 min · Demonstration and safety briefing. Teacher uses the materials, techniques and safety slides to demonstrate polymer clay conditioning and shaping, paper rolling and sealing, wire manipulation, and assembly using recycled components; explicitly models safe cutting, bending, piercing, heat use if applicable, and responsible material handling. Students observe, identify two hazards and state the control measure for each before collecting equipment.

  3. 15–20 min · Plan the investigation. Teacher distributes the bead investigation worksheet and explains that students will make at least three contrasting prototypes, changing one or more variables such as material, shape, texture, pattern or surface treatment. Students complete a quick plan identifying their jewellery concept, intended user, materials to test, tools required and two initial design criteria.

  4. 20–43 min · Practical prototyping. Teacher sets up five workstations and circulates, checking PPE, tool technique, material selection and safe working practices; prompt students to record useful observations rather than aiming for a finished product. Students work in pairs at allocated stations while individually making three or more bead prototypes, such as a rolled paper bead, textured clay bead, wire-wrapped form or bead using recycled components.   6. 52–57 min · Evaluate and select. Teacher uses the evaluation and discussion slides to lead a brief comparison: “Which material and process produced the strongest combination of function, appearance and sustainability?” Students select one prototype or combination to develop, justify their decision using material properties and feedback, and identify a next step for the next practical lesson.

  7. 57–60 min · Clean-up and exit check. Teacher displays the clean-up and plenary slide, checks work areas and collects worksheets and feedback templates. Students return tools and unused materials, dispose of waste appropriately, and complete the worksheet exit prompt: “My next design change will be ___ because ___.”
