Overview

Students investigate how digital systems use peripherals to receive, display and store data. They classify familiar devices by purpose, then choose suitable peripherals for a classroom task and explain how the same information can be represented in different ways.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook: What can a tablet do? Teacher opens the introduction and mystery-device slides and displays images of a tablet, keyboard, camera, headphones and printer. Ask, “Which parts help information go into the system, come out of it or be saved?” Students make an initial choice with a partner and share one reason.

  2. 5–13 min · Direct teach: Systems and peripherals. Teacher uses the input, output and storage teaching slides to define a digital system as connected parts working together, and a peripheral as a device added to provide a function. Demonstrate or point to a keyboard, touchscreen, microphone, camera, monitor, speaker, printer and USB drive; students act out input as “send in”, output as “show or play” and storage as “keep”.

  3. 13–22 min · Pair sort and justify. Teacher distributes the digital systems sorting worksheet and gives pairs access to classroom devices or picture cards. Students place or record peripherals in input, output or storage columns, then complete the prompt, “This peripheral is useful when…” Teacher checks pairs and asks, “Could this device have more than one purpose?” Clarify that some systems, such as a tablet, can take photos, record sound, display information and transmit data.

  4. 22–30 min · Data can look different. Teacher opens the data representation comparison slides and presents examples such as the number four shown as 4, four dots, the word “four” or a picture of four objects. Students complete the worksheet task by representing the same classroom information in two ways, such as “There are 25 students” as a numeral and a picture or tally. Discuss which representation is easiest for counting, reading or sharing.

  5. 30–39 min · Design challenge: Choose the tools. Teacher displays the design challenge and decision prompts: “Your class is making a short presentation about a local animal. Which digital system and peripherals will you use to collect, create, share and store information?” In groups of three or four, students complete the final worksheet task, selecting at least three peripherals and explaining each choice. Groups may include a camera or microphone for input, a screen or speaker for output, and a school account or USB drive for storage. Students briefly present their plan to another group.

  6. 39–45 min · Review and exit check. Teacher revisits the recap and exit-question slide and asks students to show thumbs up, sideways or down for each success criterion. Students complete an exit ticket strip by naming one input peripheral, one output or storage peripheral, and showing the same data in two different forms. Collect tickets as students leave.

  • Use the exit ticket to identify students who need further practice distinguishing peripheral functions or explaining why representations suit different purposes.

Differentiation

  • Support students with labelled device images, gestures for input/output/storage, a three-column word bank and sentence starters: “I use a ___ to ___” and “The same data can be shown as ___ and ___.”
  • Pair students strategically and assign inclusive roles such as device handler, recorder, discussion leader and reporter. Allow students to draw, point, speak or use speech-to-text rather than relying only on extended writing.
  • Provide enlarged, high-contrast worksheet versions and read instructions aloud for students with visual, language or literacy needs. Offer headphones or a quieter workspace where appropriate.
  • Extend confident students by asking them to identify a peripheral with more than one purpose, explain how data could be transmitted from one device to another, or compare which representation would be best for a presentation, calculation or audience.
