Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Welcome and visual hook Open with the equal-parts introduction slides. Show a picture of a sandwich or chocolate block divided in different ways and ask: “Which pieces would be fair to share? How do you know?” Introduce the WALT and explain that equal means “the same size”, not simply “the same number of pieces”.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Teacher modelling: equal or unequal? Display several rectangles and circles divided into parts. Invite students to use thumbs up/down or a two-card response to decide whether the parts are equal. Model folding a paper rectangle in half, opening it and tracing the fold.   3. 12–20 minutes – Hands-on folding and cutting Give each student paper shapes, child-safe scissors and a pencil. Students fold a rectangle in half, press the crease, open it and cut along the crease with support as needed. They then fold a new shape into quarters by folding in half twice. Students label the parts “half” or “quarter”. Check folds by placing the pieces on top of one another to see whether they match.

  4. 20–30 minutes – Guided practical investigation In pairs, students use the fraction circles cut-out pack to build and compare wholes, halves and quarters. Ask: “How many equal pieces make one whole?” and “What would happen if one piece were bigger?” Students sort examples into equal parts and not equal parts, explaining their decisions to a partner. Encourage students to use the words whole, equal, half, halves, quarter and quarters.

  5. 30–39 minutes – Independent or supported practice Distribute the equal parts and fractions worksheet. Students identify shaded halves and quarters, circle shapes divided into equal parts, and draw lines to divide shapes into halves and quarters. Students who need a reduced writing load may demonstrate with cut-out shapes or complete selected questions while explaining answers orally. Circulate and assess whether students are making equal, rather than merely visually pleasing, partitions.

  6. 39–45 minutes – Share, review and exit check Open the equal-parts review slides and revisit the success criteria. Invite two or three students to show a shape divided into halves or quarters and explain how they checked it was equal. For the final check, ask each student to draw a rectangle divided into quarters or show one using the paper pieces, then name one quarter. Record responses for the next lesson.
