Overview

Students examine the principles and practices that make social and cultural research ethical, including informed consent, privacy, confidentiality, voluntary participation, cultural respect, minimising harm and honest reporting. They apply these principles to a hypothetical Year 11 research proposal and revise it to make it safer, fairer and more respectful.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Ethical dilemma hook. Open with the ethical dilemma hook showing the question, “Should a researcher ever observe people without telling them?” and briefly outline a fictional study of student behaviour in a school common area. Students silently choose “yes”, “no” or “it depends”, then explain their initial reasoning to a partner. Establish that ethical research protects people, communities and the integrity of knowledge.

  2. 5–15 min · Direct teaching: principles and practices. Use the principles overview to introduce informed consent, voluntary participation and the right to withdraw; privacy and confidentiality; minimising physical, psychological, social and cultural harm; cultural respect and consultation; fairness and inclusion; avoiding deception unless strongly justified; secure data handling; and honesty in analysis and reporting. Students complete the first section of the ethical research analysis worksheet, matching each principle with a practical research action, such as using plain-language information, removing names from data or storing recordings securely.

  3. 15–25 min · Modelled analysis. Display the model scenario describing a proposed survey about cultural identity that collects names, asks sensitive questions and requires participation during class time. Think aloud while identifying risks, affected participants and missing safeguards. Students annotate the same scenario on the worksheet, using the prompts “What is the risk?”, “Who could be affected?” and “What should the researcher do?”

  4. 25–43 min · Group investigation and redesign. Place students in five groups of five and allocate each group a different scenario on the scenario redesign task: an interview about family finances; photographs taken at a community event; research involving Aboriginal or culturally diverse communities; an anonymous online wellbeing survey; or observation of interactions in a public place. Students identify at least three ethical issues, rank the most serious risk, and redesign the method. Their plan must include a clear purpose, participant group, consent process, privacy measure, withdrawal option, data-storage action and strategy for respectful communication. Groups may use the exam command words reference mat to support precise explanations and justifications.

  5. 43–53 min · Peer review and discussion. Use the peer-review prompts to guide a structured exchange. One student from each group explains the original risk and one improvement; another group responds with “Which principle does this address?” and “What risk remains?” Students record one strength and one suggested improvement on their worksheet. Emphasise that ethical decisions may involve trade-offs, but participant safety and dignity are not optional.

  6. 53–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the opening dilemma using the plenary question. Students individually complete the final worksheet response: “A researcher should not begin this investigation until…” and list three conditions that must be met. Invite two or three students to share responses, then collect worksheets to assess understanding and planned application.
