Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and noticing

Open with the shape mystery introduction. Display a collection of everyday objects or photographs, such as a plate, window, road sign and book cover. Ask: “What shapes can you see?” and “How do you know?” Accept informal descriptions, then explain that mathematicians look closely at features to describe and sort shapes.

  1. 5–12 minutes – Introduce shape language

Use the shape vocabulary slides to introduce or revise circle, triangle, square, rectangle, side, vertex, straight and curved. Model tracing around a shape with a finger. Emphasise that a side is a straight boundary and a vertex is a corner where sides meet. Clarify that a circle has a curved boundary and no vertices. Students repeat and use each term in a sentence with a partner.

  1. 12–20 minutes – Guided investigation

Give each student several classroom shape pieces or drawn shapes. Refer to the guided investigation prompts and ask students to find a shape with three sides, a shape with four sides, a shape with a curved edge and a shape with no corners. Count sides together, touching each side once, and record findings on the board. Include different orientations and sizes so students notice that turning or resizing a shape does not change its properties.

  1. 20–32 minutes – Pair sorting task

Place students in three pairs and provide each pair with a mixed collection of 2D shape cards or cut-outs. Hand out the Line and Shape Prompt Cards and select the Sort, Describe and Count prompts. Invite each pair to display one sorting arrangement. If a shape has been sorted differently, compare the rules and discuss whether both arrangements can be correct.

  1. 39–43 minutes – Individual check

Distribute the shape properties check sheet. Students complete a short task independently: name three pictured shapes, count sides and vertices on two shapes, circle the shape with a curved edge, and draw a line to show a sorting rule. Read questions aloud and allow students to point, count or explain orally where needed. Display the independent check reminder.

  1. 43–45 minutes – Plenary

Return to the plenary reflection slide. Ask students to complete the sentence: “I can classify a shape by looking at its…” Invite two or three responses. Revisit the learning intentions and identify one word students used accurately today.
