Filipino Conversation Showcase

Overview

This final lesson consolidates the unit through a supported Filipino conversation and cultural presentation. The student draws on familiar greetings, introductions, personal information, preferences and classroom interaction language to interpret prompts and create a short spoken and multimodal text for an audience.

Learning intentions

Students will:

• use familiar Filipino expressions to open, maintain and close a conversation
• respond to questions and ask for clarification when needed
• create and present a short conversation that includes a cultural connection
• select appropriate vocabulary, sentence structures, pronunciation and visual features for the audience and purpose

Success criteria

• I can greet someone, introduce myself and exchange basic information in Filipino.
• I can ask and answer familiar questions using mostly accurate language.
• I can use a repair phrase or gesture when I do not understand.
• I can present a clear, respectful conversation with a cultural detail.

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

1. 0–4 min · Reconnect and goal. Teacher opens the conversation showcase deck to display the provocative hook, “How can a short conversation show respect and connection?” and briefly revisits the unit’s key language. Student identifies three expressions they remember and explains when each might be used.

2. 4–9 min · Supported model. Teacher models a short exchange with the student, using the prompt card on the conversation planning and reflection sheet as a visual scaffold. The model includes “Kumusta?”, “Magandang araw!”, “Ako si…”, “Ikaw, ano ang pangalan mo?”, “Taga-saan ka?”, “Gusto ko…” and “Puwede bang ulitin?”; teacher pauses to highlight turn-taking, polite tone and natural gestures. Student listens, identifies the purpose of each line and repeats selected phrases.

3. 9–14 min · Interpret and prepare. Teacher reveals three possible situations in the conversation showcase deck: welcoming a new student, meeting someone at a community celebration, or introducing a Filipino food, place or tradition. Student chooses one situation, then completes the planning boxes on the conversation planning and reflection sheet with a greeting, two questions and answers, one preference or description, one repair phrase and a respectful closing.

4. 14–20 min · Rehearse and improve. Teacher acts as conversation partner, prompting only when necessary and giving feedback on intelligibility, word choice, pronunciation and response detail. Student rehearses twice, first using the worksheet and then attempting the exchange with fewer prompts; student records one improvement target before the final presentation.

5. 20–26 min · Conversation showcase. Teacher introduces the presentation expectations through the conversation showcase deck: speak clearly, maintain turn-taking, include a cultural detail, and use an appropriate visual or gesture. Student presents the conversation, supported by a simple drawing, object, image or the worksheet, and answers one follow-up question in Filipino or with a Filipino-English response where appropriate.

6. 26–30 min · Feedback and reflection. Teacher gives specific verbal feedback and revisits the opening question. Student completes the reflection section on the conversation planning and reflection sheet, identifying one successful expression, one challenge and one next step, then gives a brief spoken exit response: “Ngayon, kaya kong…” followed by a Filipino phrase or skill.

Assessment

• During modelling and rehearsal, check whether the student understands the purpose of familiar expressions, responds appropriately, takes turns and uses a repair strategy.
• Use a brief checklist during the showcase: comprehensibility, appropriate vocabulary and structures, interaction, cultural respect, and presentation for audience and purpose.
• Review the worksheet reflection and spoken exit response to identify achievement and the most useful focus for future learning.

Differentiation

• Provide a colour-coded sentence frame, word bank, pronunciation guide and optional English glosses; allow the student to point to or read the planned exchange during the first rehearsal.
• Break the conversation into short turns and offer teacher modelling, repetition and extra wait time. Accept a brief Filipino-English response when the student is demonstrating interaction or cultural understanding.
• For challenge, ask the student to add a follow-up question, extend an answer with a reason or description, and adapt the conversation spontaneously when the teacher changes one detail.
• Be respectful of cultural knowledge: use only class-approved information and invite the student to choose a cultural detail they can explain confidently, without requiring personal or family disclosure.
