Overview

In this sixth lesson of the eight-lesson “Designing with Robotics” unit, students complete the decoration and refinement of their robotic structures. Building on earlier planning and construction, they will make deliberate choices about colour, pattern and added features while checking that decoration does not interfere with movement, sensors or other functions. Each group will finish with a structure ready for testing.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and retrieval. Open with the hook and learning intention slides showing a plain robotic structure beside a carefully decorated one, and ask, “Can decoration make a robot work better, worse or just look different?” Students briefly recall one function their structure must perform and share one possible decoration choice with a partner.

  2. 5–11 min · Model safe refinement. Use the safety and refinement slides to demonstrate selecting lightweight, secure materials; measuring and marking before cutting; and keeping wheels, sensors, switches, wires and moving joints clear. Teacher models a quick function check before and after adding a paper feature, thinking aloud about weight, balance, friction and accessibility. Students identify one possible risk or function problem in their own structure.

  3. 11–15 min · Plan the finishing touches. Distribute the decoration and refinement planner and, if groups need clearer responsibilities, hand out the Group Role Cards. Students sketch or list two decoration ideas, choose materials, predict one effect on function and allocate roles such as materials manager, maker, safety checker and recorder.

  4. 15–32 min · Decorate and refine. Refer to the making steps and visual theme examples as groups work on their structures. Students measure, mark, cut, join and attach decorations, using recycled or reusable materials where practical; they pause after each major change to check stability, movement, sensor access and safe operation. Teacher circulates, checks tool use, questions design decisions and prompts groups to remove or adjust anything that blocks function.

  5. 32–38 min · Function and quality check. Display the testing checklist slide and ask groups to complete a quiet “ready check”: structure is secure, decoration is attached, moving parts can move, sensors and controls are accessible, and no sharp or loose pieces create a hazard. Students make one final improvement and record the change and its reason on the worksheet.

  6. 38–45 min · Gallery share and exit reflection. Groups place structures where others can view them and use the final the gallery discussion and plenary slides prompts: “What design choice supports the robot’s purpose?” and “What must we test next lesson?” Students give one positive, specific comment to another group, then complete the worksheet’s exit reflection before packing materials away safely.
