Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Welcome and learning goal Open with the review opening and learning intention. Tell students that today is a calm opportunity to show what they know, not a competition. Briefly revisit the unit’s key ideas: whole, equal parts, numerator, denominator, halves, quarters and other familiar fractions.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Whole-class visual review Use the visual fraction review to display a whole shape, a shape divided into unequal parts, and several fraction models. Ask: “Is this divided fairly?”, “How many equal parts are there?” and “How many parts are shaded?” Accept pointing, speaking, drawing or selecting an answer. Record useful vocabulary where all students can see it.

  3. 12–17 minutes – Assessment instructions and practice item Distribute the fraction review and assessment worksheet. Read the instructions aloud and complete one example together without solving any of the assessed items. Model that students may draw, use words, write numerals or explain orally to an adult. Show the assessment instructions and worked-example slide and check that each student understands how to begin.

  4. 17–34 minutes – Individual assessment Students complete the worksheet independently, with support provided according to their individual learning plans. The assessment should include identifying shaded fractions, matching pictures to fraction names and symbols, partitioning shapes into equal parts, placing simple fractions on a number line, comparing familiar fractions, and one short explanation. Allow visual aids, including the fraction wall and strip cards, where needed. Provide extra time, movement breaks, scribing or oral responses as appropriate; do not teach the answer.

  5. 34–40 minutes – Review and confidence check Invite students to review their work quietly using the assessment review prompts. Prompt them to check: “Did I answer every question?”, “Did I use equal parts?” and “Can another person understand my drawing?” Students may correct presentation errors but should not change an answer because of whole-class discussion.

  6. 40–45 minutes – Reflection and close Use the reflection and closing slide. Ask each student to share one fraction idea they remember or one strategy they used. Collect the completed worksheets and note any questions that caused difficulty. Celebrate effort, communication and persistence, then explain that the results will help plan the next mathematics learning.
