Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Welcome and real-life hook Open with the real-life fraction introduction. Show images such as a shared sandwich, a measuring cup and a four-part chocolate bar. Ask: “Where might we use fractions today?” Accept responses through speech, gesture, pointing or drawing. Share the WALT and success criteria in student-friendly language.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Model a real-life fraction Use a simple scenario: “Four friends share a pizza equally. What fraction of the pizza does each friend receive?” Model identifying the whole, dividing it into equal parts and recording one-quarter. Then model: “I eat one-quarter of the pizza. How much is left?” Use the visual model in the real-life fraction introduction and demonstrate a matching drawing and number sentence. Emphasise that equal parts are important.

  3. 12–17 minutes – Guided examples Display two or three short scenarios in the guided examples: sharing eight strawberries equally between two people, drinking half a bottle of water, and colouring three of four equal sections. Students solve with a partner using mini-whiteboards, counters or drawings. Invite students to explain what the whole is and what the fraction describes.

  4. 17–30 minutes – Collaborative problem design Place students in three mixed-ability groups of three or four. Distribute the fraction word-problem planning sheet. Each group chooses an everyday context, such as food, sport, classroom materials, time or money. They brainstorm a whole, divide it into equal parts, choose a familiar fraction and write a short word problem. Use the fraction wall and strip cards as a hands-on reference for groups that need to see halves, thirds, quarters or other simple equal parts. Circulate and prompt: “What is the whole?”, “How many equal parts are there?”, and “What question will your reader answer?”

  5. 30–38 minutes – Share and solve Each group reads its problem aloud or presents it with a drawing. Another group solves it using the worksheet, a model or mental reasoning. Return to the sharing prompts to support respectful feedback. Ask: “Was the whole clear?”, “Were the parts equal?”, and “Did the fraction match the story?” Support students to revise unclear problems rather than focusing on spelling.

  6. 38–45 minutes – Individual check and reflection Students complete the final section of the fraction word-problem planning sheet independently: draw or describe one fraction situation and write the fraction it represents. Invite students to complete the sentence, “My fraction means…” Review the success criteria and ask students to show one finger for “I need help”, two for “I am getting there” or three for “I can explain it”.
