Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Engage. Open with the hook and lesson introduction slides showing striking images of a wheat field, a wool jumper, a supermarket shelf and a delivery truck; ask, “Does every food item come directly from a farm?” Students make a silent prediction, then share with a partner.

  2. 5–13 min · Explicit teaching. Use the key vocabulary and visual explanation slides to model:

  • food: something people eat, such as wheat, milk, apples or bread
  • fibre: material from plants or animals used to make products, such as cotton or wool
  • farming: caring for and managing plants or animals to produce resources
  • production: the connected steps that turn resources into useful products.

Model a simple example: “Wheat is grown on a farm, harvested, milled into flour, transported and baked into bread.” Emphasise that farms provide resources, but processing, packaging, transport and retail may happen elsewhere.   1. 13–25 min · Guided image sort. Display the ABC Education Future Farmers images in the guided sorting slides and distribute the food and fibre investigation sheet to pairs.   2. 25–45 min · Collaborative KWL and concept map. Organise 32 students into eight groups of four and hand out the group role cards to clarify responsibilities.   3. 45–55 min · Share and clarify. Invite each group to give a 45-second explanation of its pathway using the share and discussion prompts. Record common connections and unanswered questions on a class KWL chart. Students listen for one similarity and one difference between two groups. Briefly highlight that suitable plants and animals depend on environmental conditions, and that sustainability includes caring for soil, water, animals and resources.

  4. 55–60 min · Exit ticket. Finish with the learning intention exit ticket slips and display the exit ticket prompt slide. Students independently name one food source, one fibre source and one question they still have. Collect the tickets and group concept maps as diagnostic evidence for planning Lesson 2.
