Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Retrieval and hook. Display the retrieval and learning-intention slides from the paddock-to-plate teaching deck and ask: “Where does bread begin?” Students answer individually, then compare responses with a partner; address the misconception that grains are manufactured rather than grown. Ask students to show thumbs up, sideways or down for: “Wheat is a plant”, “Flour is grown in a paddock” and “A combine harvester is a technology”.

  2. 5–13 min · Explicit modelling — I do. Use the paddock-to-plate teaching deck and a wheat product package to model the sequence: planting, growing, harvesting, transport, milling, processing, packaging, retail and consumption.   5. 45–55 min · Gallery feedback. Display the feedback prompts on the paddock-to-plate teaching deck. Groups leave their flowchart on the table while students rotate, silently inspect two other flowcharts and provide one specific strength and one question, such as “Your milling stage is clear” or “How is grain stored safely?” Groups return to their work, read the feedback and make one improvement. Invite two groups to explain a technology and the change it enables.

  6. 55–60 min · Knowledge check and exit. Revisit the success criteria on the paddock-to-plate teaching deck. Students complete the success criteria exit ticket slips by naming one stage, one technology used there and one sustainability question. Collect flowcharts and slips as evidence of learning.
