Guide Refinement Patterns

Overview

This lesson (28 of 30) helps the learner complete a final survey pattern analysis for their “Ultimate Guide to Me”. They will review all collected questionnaire data, find common patterns, and then decide what to refine in their personal guide using clear cause–effect reasoning.

Learning intentions

• Students will refine their personal guide by using evidence from survey results (not guesses).
• Students will identify patterns (common answers) and contrast differences (different answers) across questionnaire data.
• Students will explain refinements using a simple cause–effect chain.
• Students will present final “what we changed and why” notes in a structured, visual format.

Success criteria

• I can sort survey results into a simple chart that shows patterns.
• I can name at least 2 patterns and 1 difference using data from the surveys.
• I can write (or dictate) a clear cause–effect reasoning chain for each refinement decision.
• I can update my guide sections so the changes match the data evidence.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Dopamine Check-in + Goal. Teacher shows a “Final Survey Dashboard” (printed or on tablet) with three boxes: Patterns, Differences, Changes. Student verbally selects today’s mood (e.g., colour dot) and states the goal: “I will find patterns and refine my guide.”

2. 5–12 min · Choose the Investigation Question. Teacher prompts: “What question are we answering with the surveys?” Offer two options on screen/print:

• A) “What support helps me most?”
• B) “What situations trigger my needs?” Student selects one, then repeats it as a full sentence. Teacher records it on the Dashboard.

3. 12–22 min · Pattern Sprint (Data Sorting). Teacher introduces a low-reading tool: “Tally Track” cards or a simple spreadsheet table with only counts and a few labels. Student sorts each survey item into one of three buckets:

• Most common (top choice)
• Second common (next choice)
• Different answers (mixed results) Teacher circulates to ensure entries reflect the data exactly (no “memory guesses”). Student uses touch/drag or stickers to mark counts.

4. 22–30 min · Communicate Findings (Mini Script). Teacher models a short sentence frame (printed and read aloud if needed):

• “The pattern I see is ____ (from ____ survey items).”
• “This means I should ____ because ____.” Student records or dictates two pattern statements and one difference statement. Teacher checks that each statement references data they counted.

5. 30–39 min · Refinement Decisions (Cause–Effect Chain). Teacher provides a simple chain graphic with arrows: Survey Evidence → Feeling/Need → Guide Change. Student completes it for 2–3 changes (e.g., preferred break timing, sensory choice, wording style, calming strategy). Keep writing minimal: allow 1–2 short phrases per box, or voice-to-text/dictation.

6. 39–45 min · Final Update + Quick Share. Teacher shows the “Guide Refinement Checklist” (3 items):

• Data-backed changes added
• Cause–effect reason included
• One last review for clarity Student does a quick update to their guide pages/sections, then shares their top change in one short spoken paragraph or 3-slide verbal plan.

Assessment

• Teacher observation: student uses counts from the survey when naming patterns (formative check).
• Pattern accuracy check: student’s “pattern/difference” statements match the tally charts.
• Exit task (last 2 minutes): student states one “I changed ____ because ____” sentence using evidence.

Differentiation

• Support: provide sentence starters and allow dictation/voice-to-text; offer pre-made chart categories so the student only fills counts and labels.
• Support: reduce reading friction with icons (e.g., thumb-up for “most common”, split icon for “mixed answers”).
• Extension (if energy allows): add a third cause–effect chain and include a “watch-out” note for one situation where responses were mixed.
• Autistic/ADHD supports: short burst timing (max 10 minutes per task), choice of investigation question, and tactile/visual data organisation instead of long writing.
• If fatigue appears: swap any written box for a single recorded word/phrase and complete the refinement checklist verbally.
