Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook (conversation). Teacher displays a “mystery map” image (print or projector) with a blank legend and asks: “What do you think the symbols are telling us, and how can we prove it?” Students do a quick think-pair-share, then one or two share ideas about how to read a map.

  2. 5–12 min · Model reading a representation.
