iPad Learning Start

Overview

This 45-minute introduction teaches students how to safely handle iPads, recognise key interface features, and follow classroom iPad rules. Students explore a simple educational app and practise key routines using iPads before completing a short worksheet task.

Learning intentions

Students will:

• practise correct and safe iPad handling and charging/holding routines
• identify basic interface features (home button, apps, icons, back/return, volume/screen brightness)
• learn and practise classroom rules for iPad use (care, sharing, and taking turns)
• explore an educational app appropriately and describe what they did using simple language

Success criteria

Students can:

• hold the iPad with two hands, keep it flat, and demonstrate safe care rules
• find and open one educational app using iPad icons
• use the correct classroom rule (e.g., “hands off screens when told”, “raise hand for help”, “close app when finished”)
• complete the worksheet by labelling key iPad parts and writing one sentence about their app activity

Curriculum links

• This lesson supports Stage 2 (Year 3–4) using digital technologies safely and responsibly in classroom learning routines.
• Students practise using a device and following instructions to complete a learning task, aligning with Australian classroom expectations for digital citizenship and responsible use.
• Students communicate reasoning and understanding by describing actions taken in an app and answering simple questions on the worksheet.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Hook (iPads in the classroom). Teacher shows a “now and next” question on iPad classroom starter deck: “What should you do first when you’re handed an iPad?” Students do a quick think-pair-share, then volunteer answers.
2. 5–12 min · Safe handling demo. Teacher uses iPad classroom starter deck to model: two hands, screen facing up, no food/drinks, keep fingers off the camera lens, and what “raise hand for help” looks like. Students mirror the routines with a partner holding an empty desk space (or a demonstration unit if available), practising “stop–freeze–listen”.
3. 12–18 min · Interface basics. Teacher guides attention using iPad classroom starter deck to the iPad home screen, app icons, returning to the home screen, and getting back to a learning activity. Students follow along on their iPads: press home/return, locate one app icon, and practise closing/returning when instructed.
4. 18–27 min · Classroom iPad rules. Teacher runs through iPad rules on iPad classroom starter deck: care rules, sharing rules, taking turns, sound/notifications, and how to ask for help. Students repeat the class “rules chant” (e.g., “Care, Turn, Ask” in teacher’s wording) and give a thumbs-up if they understand each rule; otherwise they point to the slide that needs explanation.
5. 27–37 min · Guided app exploration. Teacher introduces a simple educational app on iPad classroom starter deck with one clear task: “Open the app, find today’s activity, complete one short section, then return to the home screen.” Students work in pairs or individually (depending on device availability), using the “pause and check” signals. Teacher circulates to support navigation and correct any unsafe habits.
6. 37–44 min · Worksheet reflection. Teacher distributes iPad parts and rules worksheet and prompts students to draw/label 3–4 iPad features (e.g., home button, app icon/home screen, screen area) and write one sentence: “I used the app to…” or “My iPad rule today was…” Teacher collects iPad parts and rules worksheet before the end.
7. 44–45 min · Quick plenary (Exit check). Teacher uses iPad classroom starter deck for two rapid questions: “One iPad rule” and “One interface thing you can do.” Students answer orally; teacher checks for readiness and common misconceptions.

Assessment

• Teacher observation checklist during handling and interface practice (safe grip, correct navigation, help-seeking behaviour).
• Worksheet review: labels completed and sentence includes at least one accurate rule or app action.
• Plenary verbal responses: students state one rule and one interface skill.

Differentiation

• Support: Provide sentence starters on the board for the worksheet sentence (e.g., “I used the app to…” / “My rule is…”).
• Support: Seat students with a buddy and pre-assign “helper roles” (touch-free observer/reader of instructions).
• Extension: Challenge students to explain what they did first and last in the app (“first I… then I… after that I…”).
• EAL/SEN: Use the slide deck visuals, model responses, and accept non-verbal demonstrations (pointing to correct icons) before writing.
