In this final lesson of Beads: Design, Culture, Craft, students complete and test their jewellery pieces, then present the design thinking behind them. They evaluate the outcome against their design brief, provide respectful peer feedback and reflect on how Respect, Integrity and Excellence influenced their decisions and processes.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Reconnect and set expectations. Teacher opens with the hook and lesson goals and reminds students that today’s focus is evidence-based evaluation, respectful communication and the school values. Students place their jewellery, design brief and process records on the table and silently review what they intended to achieve.

  2. 5–12 min · Presentation model and criteria briefing. Teacher models a concise presentation using the slide prompts: inspiration and cultural or historical context, intended user, materials and properties, bead-making and construction processes, design decisions, sustainability and one limitation. Teacher clarifies that students should acknowledge sources or influences, avoid presenting another community’s cultural knowledge as their own, and distinguish inspiration from cultural ownership. Students annotate their own presentation plan on the evaluation and presentation worksheet.

  3. 12–25 min · Product testing. Teacher organises students into pairs and distributes the Prototype Testing Feedback Template. Teacher checks that testing is safe and appropriate for the jewellery type, then circulates to question students about evidence. Students test a partner’s piece against agreed criteria, such as secure joins, wearability, comfort, strength, appearance and suitability for the intended user. They record observations, criterion-based judgements and one recommended action rather than simply stating whether they like the piece.

  4. 25–45 min · Presentations and peer feedback. Teacher facilitates rapid presentations in groups of four or five, using the presentation sequence and feedback prompts to keep each presentation to approximately three minutes. Audience members record one strength and one specific question or improvement suggestion on the worksheet, using respectful technical language.

  5. 45–53 min · Individual evaluation and iteration decision. Teacher returns students to independent work and displays the evaluation prompts. Students compare test results and peer feedback with their design criteria, then complete the worksheet: What worked? Which criterion was strongest? Which was least successful? What evidence supports this judgement? What would I change in a future iteration? Students may sketch or describe one modification, such as a different bead size, stronger fastening, alternative material or revised form.

  6. 53–60 min · Values reflection and exit share. Teacher leads a brief values reflection and invites several students to share an example. Students complete the final worksheet prompts: “Respect looked like…”, “Integrity was demonstrated when…”, and “Excellence involved…”. They hand in the worksheet with their design brief and place finished work in the designated display or storage area.
