Overview

Students explore how lines can show movement, mood and ideas. They observe lines in the classroom and on a digital slide, experiment with drawing and collage, then create a “moving line creature” using paper and drawing tools. The lesson builds on prior experiences with mark-making and safe use of classroom technology.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and visual hook. Teacher opens the line discovery introduction and shows a large image made from expressive lines, asking, “What might these lines be doing?” Students use their bodies or fingers to copy a wavy, zigzag, spiral or straight line and share what each line might feel like.

  2. 5–12 min · Explore line. Teacher demonstrates lines that are thick, thin, long, short, curved, straight, broken, zigzag and spiral, linking each to possible movements or feelings; model drawing lightly first and using scissors safely. Students practise several lines in the air and on scrap paper, choosing a line that looks fast, calm, bumpy or excited.

  3. 12–18 min · ICT line hunt. Teacher revisits the line hunt instruction slide, models taking one photograph of a line found in the classroom or playground, and reinforces device rules: carry with two hands, ask before photographing people, and photograph objects only. In pairs, students use a tablet or digital camera to find and photograph one interesting line, then return the device to the collection point.

  4. 18–23 min · Plan the artwork. Teacher distributes the moving line creature planning sheet and models choosing a feeling or movement, such as calm, windy, wiggly or speedy, then planning a creature made from lines and shapes. Students draw a quick idea, select two or three colours, and tell a partner what their creature will do.

  5. 23–37 min · Create and experiment. Teacher demonstrates tearing or cutting coloured paper into shapes, arranging pieces before gluing, and adding expressive lines with crayons or markers; circulate to prompt, “Which line shows movement?” and “What could you change?” Students create a paper-and-drawing creature on A4 paper, experimenting with at least three line types and adding details that communicate movement or feeling. They may use their photographed line as inspiration.

  6. 37–42 min · Share and respond. Teacher displays the share-and-notice slide and invites a quiet gallery walk or partner share. Students point to one line, shape or colour in a peer’s work and complete the sentence, “I notice…”, followed by “It makes me think or feel…”.

  7. 42–45 min · Reflection and pack-up. Teacher returns to the reflection slide, reviews safe technology and art-material routines, and asks students to place artwork on the drying rack and devices in the charging area. Students show a thumb response to “I used lines to show an idea” and verbally finish: “My creature is ___ because ___.”

  • Provide an alternative to cutting, such as tearing paper or selecting prepared shapes. Use adaptive scissors, non-slip mats and larger paper for students with fine-motor or physical needs.
  • Extend confident students by combining repeated lines to create a pattern, showing foreground and background, or taking a second photograph that shows a different kind of line. Ensure all students may communicate their idea through speaking, pointing, gesture or drawing rather than relying only on writing.
