Macbook Safety

Overview

Today students are introduced to Apple Macbooks using simple “look, touch, try, talk” routines. They will practise safe handling, learn basic functions (turn on/off, trackpad, keyboard, opening apps), and discuss digital citizenship expectations while using a shared school device.

Learning intentions

Students will:

• identify parts of a digital system on a Macbook (screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports) and explain what each is used for
• use basic Macbook functions with support (turn on, log in, open a simple app, use the trackpad/keyboard)
• demonstrate safe handling routines (carry properly, care for screen, correct hand placement, stop if something is wrong)
• discuss why personal information should be kept private and how to ask for permission before sharing it online

Success criteria

Students can:

• start and shut down a Macbook safely and correctly follow the class routine
• move the cursor using the trackpad and type a short message or note when directed
• open a simple app and find where to press “take action” (e.g., click an icon or button) to complete a task
• explain at least two digital citizenship rules (e.g., keep personal details private; ask before posting or sharing)

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–8 min · Hook & set the rules. Teacher shows the introduction slides and asks students to predict what could go wrong if you don’t handle a Macbook carefully and what you think safe rules look like. Students share ideas in think-pair-share, then contribute to a class “Care & Safety” list.

2. 8–16 min · What’s in the digital system? Teacher uses the introduction slides to point to Macbook parts (screen, keyboard, trackpad, power button/charging, ports) and models one “for a purpose” sentence for each. Students practise saying: “This part helps me…” while teacher checks for correct naming.

3. 16–24 min · Safe handling mini-practice. Teacher demonstrates safe routines (two hands to carry, close screen gently, no food/drink near devices, keep fingers off fragile areas, hands on trackpad/keys). Students practise the actions at their desks with “teacher signals” (Stop/Ready/Carry/Touch).

4. 24–33 min · Guided Macbook basic functions. Teacher returns to the introduction slides and walks through a simple algorithm with clear steps: power on → wait → log in using recorded username/password (teacher models; students follow). Students do the steps while teacher circulates, watching for correct timing and appropriate help-seeking.

5. 33–45 min · Hands-on exploration stations (pairs rotate). Teacher displays the station instructions on the introduction slides.

• Station A: Trackpad mission (click/drag, move cursor to a target)
• Station B: Keyboard mission (type 3 words: “My name is…”, using a simple note space or app)
• Station C: App icon mission (open a simple drawing or photo tool; then close it) Students rotate in small groups; teacher gives instant feedback using “I see you…” phrases.

6. 45–54 min · Create & save quickly. Teacher directs students to create a short “Macbook Welcome Card” by typing a short message and adding one picture/doodle in the app. Teacher reminds students how to locate their work (where it is stored/shown in the device or class folder as set by the school routine). Students complete the task; teacher checks that they can find their work and return to the starting screen when finished.

7. 54–60 min · Group discussion & exit check. Teacher returns to the introduction slides for two discussion prompts:

• “If you don’t know how to fix something, what do you do?”
• “Why might websites/apps store personal data, and what should you do before sharing details?” Students complete a quick verbal exit: each student shares one safe handling rule and one privacy rule. Teacher marks observation notes on a checklist.

Assessment

• Formative observation checklist during stations: correct use of trackpad click/drag, keyboard typing, and correct login steps
• Teacher questioning during discussion: students name digital citizenship rules and explain “ask for help/permission” in their own words
• Exit check: individual verbal response recorded by teacher (1 safety + 1 privacy rule)

Differentiation

• Provide sentence starters on the macbook routine worksheet (e.g., “I should ask a grown-up before…”; “A safe way to carry a device is…”)
• Use pairing so one student who is ready can support a student who needs more time, with clear teacher stop points
• For students needing extra support, offer a “step-by-step” visual on the desk (power, wait, sign in, open app, type)
• Extension (for fast finishers): add a second typed word or doodle and demonstrate closing the app correctly
