Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Wonder hook. Open with the opening mystery photographs showing an ice cube, a glass of water and an inflated balloon, and ask, “What do these three things have in common?” Students quietly predict, then share ideas with a partner. Explain that today they will investigate three different forms, or states, of matter.

  2. 5–12 min · Introduce the three states. Use the solids, liquids and gases slides to introduce the words solid, liquid and gas with familiar examples. Teacher demonstrates that a solid keeps its own shape, a liquid flows and takes the shape of its container, and a gas spreads out and is often difficult to see. Students use simple actions—freeze like a solid, flow like a liquid and stretch out like a gas—to rehearse the ideas.

  3. 12–24 min · Ice and water investigation. Place one ice cube in a clear cup for each table group and provide a small cup of room-temperature water. Do not allow students to taste or handle the materials unless directed. Use the investigation instruction slides to model looking closely, touching only the outside of the cup and describing changes. Students work in groups of four, taking turns as observer, recorder, equipment manager and reporter. They draw or write what the ice and water look and do at the start, then observe again after several minutes. Discuss: “Does the ice keep its shape?” “What happens to water when it is poured?” “What change can we see?”

  4. 24–32 min · Balloon air investigation. Show a deflated and a teacher-prepared inflated balloon. Explain that the balloon contains air, a gas, even though the air cannot normally be seen. Gently release air from one balloon near the floor, away from faces, and ask students what they notice. In groups, students compare the shape and feel of the inflated and deflated balloons without stretching, twisting or popping them. They record one observation on the states of matter observation sheet. Emphasise that balloons must not be placed near mouths, and students should tell an adult if latex causes discomfort.

  5. 32–39 min · Sort and explain. Display the sorting prompt in the picture-sorting and discussion slides. Show pictures or objects such as a book, juice, rain, a rock, cooking steam and air in a tyre. Students help place each example under solid, liquid or gas, explaining their choice using “I think it is a ___ because ___.” Where an example is uncertain, accept ideas and return to the observable evidence: Does it keep its shape, flow, or spread out?

  6. 39–45 min · Record and share. Students complete the final section of the states of matter observation sheet by drawing one solid, one liquid and one gas, then circling the matching labels. Invite several students to share a drawing. Finish with the recap and exit question slide: “Which state of matter was easiest to observe today, and what evidence supports your answer?”
