Overview

Lesson structure (20 minutes)

  1. 0–3 minutes – Hook and connect

Open with the coordinate-grid hook and introduction slides. Display a simple treasure-map grid and ask: “How could we tell someone exactly where the treasure is without pointing?” Invite students to describe locations using everyday language such as “three squares across and two squares up”.

  1. 3–7 minutes – Explicit teaching

Use the labelled grid and worked-example slides to model a first-quadrant grid. Identify the origin, horizontal axis and vertical axis. Explain that coordinates are written as an ordered pair: the first number tells us how far to move across, and the second tells us how far to move up.

Model the coordinate (3, 2): start at the origin, move 3 spaces across, then 2 spaces up. Say each movement aloud and mark the point. Contrast it briefly with (2, 3), showing that changing the order changes the position.

  1. 7–10 minutes – Guided movement activity

  1. 18–20 minutes – Plenary and assessment

Collect the worksheets or photograph the completed grids. Note whether each student can identify the axes, read an ordered pair and plot a point independently.
