Lesson structure (70 minutes) — Lesson 1: The rise of megacities

  1. 0–8 minutes – Visual inquiry. Display the contrasting urban-growth images in the introductory visual inquiry slides. Students complete a See–Think–Wonder response individually, then compare observations with a partner. Invite several responses without correcting every misconception immediately.

  2. 8–20 minutes – Explicit teaching. Use the key concept slides to define megacity, global population growth, urbanisation and urban population growth. Clarify that urbanisation is an increasing proportion of people living in urban areas, whereas urban population growth is an increase in the number of people living in an urban area.

Students complete the extended response: “Explain one major challenge facing Mumbai and evaluate one management response.” They must use one specific example, two geographical terms and a clear judgement. Finish with the self-check on the final response checklist.
