Overview

Students collect class data about favourite fruits, organise it in a simple table, and represent the results using objects and drawings. They describe what the display shows, building on prior experiences of sorting, counting and comparing quantities.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and question. Teacher opens the question and fruit picture slides and displays four fruit choices: apple, banana, orange and watermelon. Ask, “Which fruit is the class favourite, and how could we find out fairly?” Students turn and talk, then suggest ways to collect everyone’s answer.

  2. 7–15 min · Model collecting data. Teacher explains that the question must be clear and everyone gives one response; model recording names or tally marks in a class table, checking that no response is missed or counted twice. Students practise answering the question and help the teacher record the first few responses.

  6. 47–55 min · Share and reason. Teacher selects pairs to show their displays and asks classmates to check whether the objects or drawings match the class table. Students explain one observation and identify any errors, such as a missing response, an extra object or objects that are not lined up clearly.

  7. 55–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Teacher returns to the final reflection slide and asks, “What makes a data display useful?” Students complete the final question on the reflection and interpretation section: draw or describe the most popular fruit and write one sentence explaining how they know.
