Teaching Instructions

Lesson structure (53 minutes)

  1. 0–6 min · Hook and community need. Open with the opening lunchbox comparison showing a single-use snack packet beside a reusable or compostable alternative; ask, “Which design better meets a student’s needs, and what might happen to each package after lunch?” Students silently notice, think-pair-share, then contribute ideas such as protection, convenience, cost, safety and reduced waste.

  2. 6–14 min · Explicit teaching. Use the sustainability teaching slides to introduce the design brief: “Design packaging for one school snack that protects the food, is easy to use and creates less waste.” Explain that designers consider users, materials, function, appearance, safety, accessibility and sustainability. Model technical vocabulary including product, user, material, reusable, recyclable, compostable, durable and design feature. Students help identify which features would make packaging suitable for different users, including a student with limited hand strength or vision.

  3. 14–22 min · Investigate and plan. Distribute the sustainable packaging design brief. Students identify the intended user, list three needs and circle or write sustainability considerations. In pairs, students examine familiar packaging or teacher-provided photographs and record one useful feature and one possible environmental concern. Conduct a quick check by asking pairs to justify one design requirement.

  4. 22–32 min · Generate and compare digitally. Demonstrate the digital design comparison instructions. Students work in groups of three using a shared slide, drawing app or simple word-processing table to create two thumbnail designs. Each design must include a material choice and one accessibility feature. Groups compare their ideas against the brief using three headings: meets the user’s needs, reduces environmental impact and is practical to make. Students choose one design and give a reason for their decision.

  5. 32–44 min · Communicate and sequence. Students use the selected idea to complete an annotated drawing on the sustainable packaging design brief. They label at least four features, such as lid, fold, handle, recycled card or washable fabric, and write a short explanation of how the design works. They then number five or six making steps, for example measure, mark, cut, fold, join and test. Groups may use the group role cards to share responsibilities such as designer, materials manager, recorder or reporter. Circulate and ask, “What will happen first?”, “Which resource will you need?” and “How will you test safety and strength?”

  6. 44–49 min · Design share and feedback. Display the peer-feedback prompts. Each group gives a 30-second explanation of its chosen design, material and sustainability decision. Listening groups provide one specific positive comment and one question, focusing on the success criteria rather than artistic appearance. Students make one small improvement to their drawing or sequence.

  7. 49–53 min · Exit assessment. Use the plenary and exit questions to revisit the learning intention. Students complete the final prompts on the worksheet: “My design meets the user’s need by…” and “One sustainable choice I made was…”. Invite two or three students to share. Collect the worksheets and digital designs for assessment.
