Teaching Instructions

I want to introduce fractions of shapes. Activate prior knowledge, then students fols shapes into halves, quarters. Also show non- examples. Then I want a read and make for a pizza activity. Eg. Put Mushrooms on 1/2 your pizza. Put ham on 1/4 of your pizza etc.

Overview

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Teacher displays a round pizza image and asks, “If two people share this fairly, how much does each person receive?” then shows a second pizza shared unfairly; students turn and talk about what makes a share fair and share examples of fractions they have seen in everyday life. Open with the pizza hook and prior-knowledge slides.

  2. 5–13 min · Model equal parts. Teacher uses a paper circle and models folding it carefully in half, opening it, and folding again to make four equal parts; label the whole, one-half and one-quarter, emphasising that equal means the parts are the same size. Students complete the exit prompts on the reflection and exit section: draw a shape divided into four equal parts, shade one quarter, and finish the sentence, “Equal parts are important because …” Invite several students to share their reasoning and restate the key idea that fractions describe equal parts of a whole. Close with the review and exit-question slide.
