Overview

In this sixth lesson of the eight-lesson unit Paddock to Purpose Design, students move from an agreed design plan to making a scaled prototype, model or storyboard. They apply prior research about food and fibre production, sustainable materials and product purpose while working collaboratively and recording design changes.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Safety and role check. Teacher displays the learning intention and safety reminders in the opening and safety slides, checks that each team of four has a project manager, materials manager, construction manager and recorder, and distributes the Group Role Cards. Students repeat the tool-safety expectations, confirm their roles and collect only the materials listed in their plan.

  2. 5–13 min · Teacher modelling. Teacher uses an example annotated diagram from the modelling slides to demonstrate how to read labels, identify measurements, select materials by properties and make one safe joining technique using scissors, tape, glue or string. Teacher deliberately models a small failure, explains the change, and records it as “Change 1: … because …”. Students observe, identify the evidence supporting each material choice and rehearse the sequence with a partner.

  3. 13–25 min · Guided planning and rehearsal. Teacher guides teams through the prototype planning and change-log sheet, prompting: “What evidence supports this material choice?”, “What must be measured?” and “What will you change if it fails?” Students check their annotated diagram, sequence three to five construction steps, list resources, decide who completes each task and practise one joining or construction technique with scrap material. Each team obtains teacher approval before beginning its prototype.

  4. 25–50 min · Team prototype construction. Teacher releases teams to construct a scaled prototype, model or storyboard, circulating for brief check-ins on safe tool use, purposeful design, accurate measurement and inclusive participation. Students follow their agreed protocol, measure and join materials, manage offcuts responsibly, and have the recorder update the change log whenever a decision or process changes. The project manager gives time warnings and ensures roles rotate or are shared if a task is completed.

  5. 50–55 min · Progress conference. Teacher pauses construction and meets each team for a rapid conference using the prompts in the construction and conference slides: “What is working?”, “What evidence supports your decision?”, “What has changed?” and “What is your next action?” Students show their prototype, explain one material or construction decision, identify one difficulty and state the next step needed to improve purpose, stability or sustainability.

  6. 55–60 min · Exit reflection and reset. Teacher displays the reflection prompts in the plenary slides and hands out the Success Criteria Exit Ticket Slips. Students complete the slip by stating what was built, what changed, whether the prototype is stable and purposeful, and the next action for Lesson 7; teams return tools, sort reusable materials and leave prototypes labelled for storage.
