Geographic concepts Space Lesson 2 – Population Density and Related Skills I Do (Explicit Teaching): Where do people live in the world? Class reads Ch 4.2 of the textbook aloud, teacher explains/clarifies as needed (note: text explains population density). We do (Guided Practice): Students work on pie graph and population density problems in Worksheet 4.2 - teacher assists as students work (solutions available here - display on smartboard for students to check their work). Talk to Maths re year 7 pie graph knowledge With Teacher assistance, students research population data re three largest cities in each of Australia and South Africa; calculate population density of each city (Teacher models one calculation) and compare results; draw conclusions about liveability of each place based on density data. Overview

Students investigate where people live and why population density varies between places. They read and discuss population-density information, calculate and represent data for major Australian and South African cities, then use evidence to make reasoned conclusions about liveability.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Teacher displays the opening population map and question and asks, “Where do most people live, and why might some places be more crowded than others?” Students make an individual prediction, then share one possible reason with a partner.

  2. 5–17 min · Explicit teaching: population density. Teacher uses student-friendly slides or board notes and a short teacher-provided reading extract to explain population, population distribution, population density, area and liveability. Teacher models the formula: population density = population ÷ area, using a simple worked example, and links density to the concept of space. Students annotate the definition and formula in their workbooks or on the provided notes sheet and answer brief oral-check questions.

  3. 17–27 min · Guided graphing practice. Teacher distributes the population density and graphing worksheet and displays the guided practice instructions and worked example. Students complete the pie-graph and introductory population-density questions individually for three minutes, then compare methods with a partner while the teacher circulates and checks understanding. Teacher confirms solutions using the answer display and addresses any pie-graph misconceptions.

  4. 27–44 min · City data investigation. Teacher provides the city comparison data table and locates Australia, South Africa and the six cities on classroom maps or location slides. Students work in pairs to calculate and record population density for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The teacher models one calculation, reinforces units and rounding, and prompts students to compare the spaces: “Which city has the greatest density? What does the data show, and what does it not show?”

  5. 44–52 min · Evidence and liveability discussion. Teacher leads a structured pair discussion using the comparison and discussion prompts. Students write a short conclusion comparing one Australian and one South African city, using at least two density figures and explaining one possible effect on liveability. They consider that high density may support public transport, services and employment, but may also create congestion, housing pressure and pollution; density alone cannot determine whether a place is liveable.

  6. 52–60 min · Independent consolidation and exit check. Teacher provides a short consolidation sheet with definition, calculation, comparison and evidence questions. Students complete the questions and the exit response: “Population density is useful for comparing liveability because…, but it is limited because…”, including one calculation or data reference. Unfinished work may be completed as homework.
