Lesson Structure
1. Introduction and Warm-up (5 minutes)
- Begin with a calm, positive circle discussion: "What are some ways algebra helps us in everyday life?"
- Briefly remind students of the key algebra concepts covered in the unit.
- Explain the purpose of today’s presentations: to share what they have learned and how they can use algebra outside school.
- Set clear expectations for respectful listening and support among classmates.
Differentiation & Engagement: Use visual cues and a concrete example (e.g., using formula to calculate shopping discounts) to connect algebra to authentic contexts they can relate to.
2. Portfolio Presentations (30 minutes)
- Each student presents their personal portfolio for approximately 1.5 minutes.
- Suggested presentation content:
- A brief description of their portfolio’s focus (e.g., calculating costs, using formulas to plan something practical)
- Key algebraic skills demonstrated (writing expressions, substituting values, solving equations)
- Real-life connection and why it matters to them
