Learning Intentions

By the end of this lesson, students will:

• Rehearse their animal adventure stories in small groups.
• Practise performance skills, including facing the audience and using a clear voice.
• Refine their movements to match their animal roles more effectively.

Success Criteria

Students will demonstrate success by:

• Confidently performing their animal roles with clear and loud voices.
• Using expressive movements to bring their characters to life.
• Rehearsing cooperatively within their groups.

Materials

• Animal masks or simple props (optional)
• Open space for rehearsing
• Printed scripts or story outlines (previously created in the unit)

Lesson Structure

1. Welcome & Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Activity: "Animal Charades"

• Students stand in a circle.
• The teacher secretly tells one student an animal (e.g. kangaroo, emu, wombat).
• The student silently acts out the animal while the class guesses.
• Repeat with a few different animals to get students engaged and moving.

Purpose: This warm-up helps students focus on movement and expression, setting the stage for rehearsals.

2. Group Rehearsal & Refinement (15 minutes)

Step 1: Group Reminders (5 minutes)

• Recap key performance skills:
  • Facing the audience to ensure their movements and expressions are seen.
  • Using a strong, clear voice so their story can be heard.
  • Moving like their animal to create believable characters.

Step 2: Rehearsing in Small Groups (10 minutes)

• Each group finds a space to rehearse their animal story.
• They practise their lines and movements, focusing on expression and clarity.
• Teacher circulates, giving feedback:
  • "Can you make your kangaroo hops bigger?"
  • "Remember to face the audience when you speak!"
  • "Try making your lion’s roar even louder!"

3. Group Sharing & Reflection (10 minutes)

Mini-Showcase (5 minutes)

• Each group performs a 20-second snippet of their story with their best movements and voices.
• Peers give positive feedback using sentence starters:
  • "I liked how you moved like a real [animal]!"
  • "Your voice was really clear when you said [line]!"

Reflection Discussion (5 minutes)

• Teacher asks:
  • What was easy about rehearsing?
  • What was tricky? How can we improve next time?
  • How did we show our animal characters through dance, voice, and movement?

Differentiation

• Support: Pair EAL/D or quieter students with confident peers for encouragement.
• Extension: Challenge students to add sound effects (e.g. wind, rushing water) with their voices.
