This is lesson 5 of 5 in the unit "Living Things Life Cycles". Lesson Title: Evaluate: Science Showcase Lesson Description: 60 minutes. Conduct a class Science Showcase where students display models and artworks, explain their findings and respond to questions. Use a rubric assessing conceptual accuracy, use of evidence/data, observations and representations, scientific vocabulary, communication and reflection. Formative checks continue through questioning, peer feedback and self-assessment; the final rubric and written explanation provide summative evidence. Support includes an accessible assessment layout, visual word bank, read-aloud instructions, scribing or speech-to-text and an oral presentation option; extend advanced learners by critiquing a claim using evidence and suggesting a further investigation. ICT: digital portfolios, recorded presentations, QR-linked explanations or a class slideshow. Include cross-curricular integration across the unit, not as a separate lesson: in English, students analyse the structure of a science report and create an illustrated digital report for a defined audience; in Mathematics, they measure plant growth and construct/interpet a simple column graph. These products contribute to the science assessment for AC9S3I03, AC9S3I04 and AC9S3I06. Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Reconnect and explain the challenge. Teacher displays the opening question in the Science Showcase deck: “How can we prove that our explanation of a life cycle is accurate?” and revisits the WALT, success criteria and assessment expectations. Students use a quick think-pair-share to name one piece of evidence they could use. If appropriate, students may refer to a local species, seasonal observation or locally approved/community-endorsed source, and identify one respectful action for caring for that species or its habitat.

  2. 5–25 min · Independent summative assessment. Teacher distributes the independent Science Showcase assessment and reads the instructions aloud, clarifying that students must complete their own thinking. Students analyse a new set of living, once-living and non-living examples; interpret a simple life-cycle data table; sequence and label plant and animal stages; and write, draw, record or dictate an evidence-based comparison. The assessment should include a clearly spaced layout, picture support, a plant-growth table or column graph, and prompts such as “I know this because…”. Circulate to ask non-leading questions, check that students are using evidence and record observations of independence, reasoning and vocabulary. Cultural knowledge is not assessed unless it has been explicitly taught through an approved source.

  3. 25–35 min · Revise and prepare the explanation. Teacher models checking a life-cycle representation against the success criteria, using the checking and presentation slides to demonstrate accurate arrows, labels, stage order and evidence. Students revise their existing plant or animal model, artwork or digital explanation, then prepare a 30–45 second explanation for an audience. They may use a digital portfolio, recorded presentation, QR-linked explanation or class slideshow. When relevant, students may refer to a local species, seasonal observation or community-approved source and discuss one respectful action for caring for that species or its habitat, without reproducing culturally sensitive knowledge.

  4. 35–48 min · Science Showcase. Teacher organises students into small groups of four or five and displays the models and artworks. If useful, place the Life Cycles Reference Poster where students can use it as a shared visual reference. Students take turns presenting: identify the organism, explain each stage, describe one important change and refer to evidence from an observation, table or graph. Audience members ask one respectful question and give one specific piece of feedback, such as “Your evidence shows…” or “I wonder…”.

  5. 48–55 min · Evaluate explanations. Teacher brings the class together and presents two or three common claims from the assessment or presentations, using the evaluation discussion slides. Students decide whether each claim is supported, partly supported or unsupported, and justify their decision with evidence. Invite students to suggest how an explanation could be made more accurate or clearer. Students may refer to a local species, seasonal observation or community-approved source and discuss one respectful action for caring for that species or its habitat.

  6. 55–60 min · Self-assessment and close. Teacher displays the final reflection prompt in the reflection and exit slide and collects the assessment and rubric evidence. Students complete a brief self-assessment: “One idea I explained well was…”, “My evidence was…” and “Next time I would improve…”. Invite two students to share a learning success and connect the learning to English reports and Mathematics graphs completed across the unit.
