Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Shape-art hook. Teacher displays the opening shape-art image and asks, “What shapes can you see, and what might each shape become?” Students quietly notice shapes, then share observations with a partner before contributing to a class discussion. Briefly revisit that a shape stays the same when it is turned, moved or used in a different way. Accept descriptions such as “round”, “has three sides” or “has straight sides”, and model precise names where needed.

  2. 5–12 min · Teach and model. Teacher uses the shape naming and modelling slides to revise circle, triangle, square and rectangle, demonstrating how to identify each shape by looking at its features rather than its colour or position.   3. 12–16 min · Plan and talk. Teacher distributes the shape-art planning and naming sheet and explains that students may sketch an idea or place shapes on the page before gluing. Students choose a picture idea, draw a simple plan and identify at least two shapes they expect to use. Invite students to rehearse a sentence with a partner: “I will use a ___ for ___ because ___.” Check that each student can name at least one planned shape before beginning.

  4. 16–31 min · Create shape artworks. Teacher organises students into five groups of five and provides each group with trays of pre-cut coloured paper shapes, glue, paper and crayons or markers. Teacher displays the artwork steps and tidy-work reminders while circulating to prompt mathematical talk. Students arrange, name and glue shapes to create a picture, adding drawn details if desired.   6. 39–45 min · Reflect and assess. Teacher returns students to the shape-art reflection section and displays the reflection and closing prompt. Students draw or circle one shape they used, attempt to write or dictate its name, and complete the sentence “I chose this shape because…”. Invite several students to share. Collect worksheets and observe artworks as evidence of shape recognition, naming and reasoning. Preview that the next lesson will build on describing and sorting shapes by their features.
