Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Shape hook. Establish walking expectations: stay with the group, use walking feet, look carefully, and do not touch objects unless invited.

Teacher displays the shape hunt recording sheet and models drawing or marking one found object, naming its shape and completing a sentence such as, “I found a ___ on the ___.” Students repeat the sentence orally with a partner before the walk. Explain that students may draw the object, use simple marks or dictate their words to an adult or partner.

  4. 15–28 min · Guided shape discovery walk. Teacher leads the class through agreed classroom and school areas, pausing at safe observation points and using the shape hunt instruction and prompt slides to pose questions: “Can you find a rectangle?”, “Where is a circle hiding?”, and “What makes you think it is a triangle?” Students work in pairs to spot shapes and record or sketch three to five examples on the shape hunt recording sheet. Adults support students to name the object and shape, while reminding students to look for the 2D part of objects such as a sign face, window, tile, book cover or wheel.

  5. 28–37 min · Share and sort observations. Teacher gathers students and invites pairs to share one discovery, recording examples on the board under circle, triangle, square and rectangle. Use the sorting and discussion slides to revisit observations and ask, “Could this object belong in another group? Why or why not?” Students compare findings, place a hand signal for the shape group they think fits, and explain their reasoning using a sentence stem: “I think it is a ___ because ___.” Accept close approximations while gently clarifying the intended shape and distinguishing a shape from an object.

  6. 37–45 min · Review and exit check. Teacher returns to the review and exit question and shows two or three new object images. Students identify the shape they can see and give one reason to a partner. For the exit check, each student draws one environmental object on the back of the shape hunt recording sheet, circles or labels its shape, and tells the teacher or an adult why it belongs to that shape group. Finish by previewing that the next lesson will investigate how shapes can be sorted in different ways.
